The Richest Woman In America Isn't Oprah

Forbes has released its annual list of America's richest women, a powerful group that controls a combined wealth of $290 billion. Out of the 51 women, seven are self-made billionaires, including Oprah, of course, as well as 31-year-old Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes (who in our book, might be an even bigger badass than O herself). Steve Jobs' widow Laurene Powell Jobs holds the crown for the fourth richest woman in America, and San Francisco 49ers owner Denise York just made the cut with a $1.9 billion net worth.

The biggest bank account on the list, however, belongs to Alice Walton, who is worth an impressive $32 billion dollars. Her sizable assets come from Walmart — her father is responsible for creating the massive chain. Walton's sister-in-law, Christy Walton, nabbed the 14th spot with a net worth of $30.2 billion. According to Forbes, neither woman has a hand in running the family business.

Though it's troubling that women made up only 13% of this year's Forbes 400 (its larger "definitive" list of wealth in the U.S.), there's still hope for the next generation. The average age of America's richest women is 65 years old, which means millennials have plenty of time to figure out how to crash through that glass ceiling.
