Why Red Carpet Twinning Is A Bigger Deal Than Just A Cute Photo Op

Wearing the same thing as another person is a fashion faux pas. But if you have a massive ego, your outfit doppelgänger has a massive ego, and the event you both wore your outfits to is being televised and picked apart for millions of people...you can understand why some celebrity stylists are paranoid about accidental matching. However, at last night's MTV Video Music Awards, celebs were #twinning on purpose all over the place, from coordinating full-length gowns and Canadian tuxedos to his-and-hers looks and bold feminist statements.

Perhaps mainstream-popularized (and Columbused) by Taylor Swift's Bad Blood gang, the concept of a tag-along crew has long been standard for hip-hop artists, and matching costumes have been used by boy- and girl-groups since the beginning of pop music. But, recently, stars have been using their red carpet spotlight to make a statement about celebrity and equality. You aren't famous just because you're a special flower, and you're happy to mete out props to your fellow compatriots, BFFs, platonic soulmates, and life partners. In a dog-eat-dog industry, there's something special about rolling up with your squad and declaring that the person literally standing next to, not behind you, has not only got your back, but you've got theirs, too.

Walking a carpet with all eyes on you has to be downright terrifying, but we have a feeling that having a pal by your side in an unmistakably matching getup probably makes the whole experience a little more fun — and the paps totally eat it up, too. Whether it was an S.O. or just a ride-or-die bestie, last night's stars and their guests weren't afraid to link up loud and proud. Click on for the seven matchy-matchy pairs that have the twinning thing down.

Vanessa & Stella Hudgens
Definitely the most fairy-tale-like duo on last night's carpet was Vanessa Hudgens and her sister Stella, in coordinating Naeem Khan organza gowns. The looks announced their sisterhood clearly, but they differentiated by going with slightly varied silhouettes, jewels, and makeup — Vanessa wore just about enough jewelry for the both of them. Seeing these two floating down the carpet together must've looked pretty dreamy.

Kim Kardashian & Kanye West
Mr. & Mrs. West showed up to the carpet in coordinating neutral looks, with Kanye in his signature fancy sweatshirt-and-rolled-up-pants look and his pregnant wife showing off her curves in a slinky, body-hugging Balmain dress. So, if you've been living under a rock and didn't know these two were an item, these matching outfits likely got the message across. The question is, did Kanye pick out Kim's look, or did Kim pick out 'Ye's?

Amber Rose & Blac Chyna
These two were hard to miss, wearing loudly-painted, curve-hugging outfits that throw back every insult they've ever received — because sticking it to your haters is best done with a best friend by your side. Sporting words like "slut," "golddigger," "stripper," and "hoe," the duo stood strong and approached all the negativity they've experienced with a sense of matter-of-fact humor — plus, the pair is rumored to have a show coming out on MTV later this year.

Nev Schulman & Max Joseph
Catfish's Schulman and his co-star Joseph teamed up last night to promote Joseph's new film, sporting the flick's title on their T-shirts. The red carpet, as a moment in the limelight, is the perfect place to announce new projects, albums, and movies, and it was pretty sweet of Schulman to support his friend in getting the word out, when he easily could've opted for a typical suit. "My co-star Max [Joseph] made a beautiful film and I want people to see it and know about it," Schulman said to International Business Times.

Pharrell Williams & Helen Lasichanh
Giving Britney and JT, circa 2001, a run for their money, Pharrell and his wife arrived in updated all-denim looks, looking equally as adorable. Lasichanh went for overalls over a chambray shirt, while Pharrell went for a darker-wash jacket and jeans pairing. Both wore coordinating red laces and cute black toppers to finish off the outfit.

Gigi Hadid & Karlie Kloss
Taylor Swift's supermodel besties both went for bold orange-y hues in contemporary, streamlined silhouettes. Their matchy bronzed skin and mile-long legs made the supermodels look even more like they were totally riding the same wave when they got dressed. And while Lily Aldridge seems to have gotten the memo too, as far as floor-length gowns go, Swift did her own thing in a sparkly houndstooth Ashish two-piece, which seems to be getting some mixed reviews. But either way, everyone knows that only T-Swift could roll up with this many bombshells on one carpet.

Aubrey O'Day & Shannon Bex
This blonde singer duo also made a matchy statement in an eye-catching salmon-and-black color palette — proof that you can coordinate without wearing remotely the same dress. They're made of identical fabrics, but Bex chose to show off her upper leg with a thigh-high slit, while O'Day went for a more frilly minidress. We have a feeling this didn't happen by accident.
