We’re officially entering the hot, sweaty, lazy days of summer — and you know what? Sometimes you just want to take the easy way out and throw on a dress. Or denim. Or maybe a denim dress: essentially a hybrid of the top two most comfy-cool wardrobe essentials. But then you run the risk of winding up with a pretty snoozy ensemble. Elle Fanning allayed that very fear with her effortless, street style-ready take on donning a denim frock. (And it’s not really surprising, considering the 17-year-old has more than earned her fashion stripes by fronting campaigns for the likes of Miu Miu and Marc by Marc Jacobs.)

Firstly, Elle didn’t just wear any old jean dress. She opted for a flouncy, chambray iteration with refined accents that almost raised the number to cocktail-dress level: ruched racer-front straps, a feminine fit-and-flare silhouette, delicate pleating at the waist, and a twisty belt detail. The sartorially wise-beyond-her-years actress had some fun with her accessories, too — and with only two of them at that. To add some color contrast and a dash of luxury, she carried a bright red Gucci bag with a thin, gold chain-link strap. And perhaps to profess her affinity for a quick bite, she wore a pair of Jason Pollan x Soludos hamburger-and-fries embroidered espadrilles. After all, what says dog days of summer better than denim and fast food?
