You Won't Believe What's In These 11 Sex Scenes

It’s been 25 years since Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze took pottery to new, sexy levels in Ghost. For that steamy scene, we are all eternally grateful. Now, homemade pots seem a lot more interesting. Although, we finally know that using clay as a make out prop is messy and would likely ruin all of our shirts. (This is a thing that matters to me.)

But, most importantly, it made us think: Ghost isn’t unique in turning inanimate objects into sex props and/or accessories. This means there’s a slew of other movies who’ve taken everything from fruit to flowers to a tank top (you’ll see) and made them NSFW. Just remember: At one point, we all thought the animal crackers scene in Armageddon was something to aspire to. Check it out!

Nine 1/2 Weeks (1986)

Item: Fruit

I’ll be the first to say there’s nothing hotter than a full fridge, but Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke defined “night cheese” before even Liz Lemon could by utilizing every type of food imaginable for #erotic #reasons. The best part? Their moment takes place in front of the open fridge (not in bed), meaning that they really had no choice but to eat everything since they were simultaneously letting all the cold air out. The scene’s other sexy item was their carbon footprint.

Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

Item: Venetian masks

It’s true: Venetian masks have a legacy of being used sexily, but to see that sexiness applied to Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise’s onscreen relationship (via their involvement in a secret society) still somehow seemed intriguing. Ultimately, the masks are meant to allow for anonymity and play a big role in the society’s super-sexy rituals. They also mean anytime any of us see masks worn in any capacity, we automatically make a reference to Eyes Wide Shut.

50 Shades Of Grey (2015)

Item: Anastasia’s tank top

It was all fun and contracts until Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) broke into Anastasia’s (Dakota Johnson) apartment and seduced her via ice cube. But before he really got started? Props. And, since Christian’s originality is reserved only for his moves in the bedroom (and even then, dude’s boring as hell), he uses Ana’s tank top to blindfold her. Here’s hoping he reimbursed her after stretching out what I can only assume was an expensive item of clothing.

Body Of Evidence (1993)

Item: Hot candle wax

Before it was used on Ricky Martin in the "Livin’ La Vida Loca" video, it was used in Madonna and Willem Dafoe’s sex scene in Body of Evidence, a critically panned “erotic thriller” that answered the eternal question: Did we need to see these two actors have fake sex? (No.) But alas, we did: After Madonna ties up Dafoe with his leather belt, she pours wax all over his chest, and he’s pretty into it. Which is great for him, but traumatizing for anyone who’d ever accidentally spilled wax on themselves after trying to move those lit friendship candles back in the nineties.

American Pie (1999)

Item: Apple pie

We all remember hearing it: Sex, according to Chris Klein’s character Oz, feels “like warm apple pie.” And from that, one of the most infamous '90s movie scenes was born. Involving Jason Biggs, his curiosity, and a pastry that will never, ever be the same, his character begins performing missionary on the dessert — only to be interrupted by his dad (Eugene Levy). Just an all-American moment, you know?

40 Days and 40 Nights (2002)

Item: Flowers

After vowing to stay celibate for the 40 days and nights of Lent, Josh Hartnett’s character finds himself in a compromising position after meeting the girl of his dreams (played by Shannyn Sossamon). Although, he sticks to his plans. Although, instead of breaking his 40-day promise, he uses flowers (actual flowers, but especially petals) instead of um, himself during their hook-up. It’s heartbreaking that this movie came out before blog culture began.

Varsity Blues (1999)

Item: Whipped cream

We know whipped cream is hardly groundbreaking in the “things used during sex” conversation. However, in 1999’s Varsity Blues, boundaries were pushed when Ali Larter’s character donned a whipped cream bikini, in an attempt to seduce James Van Der Beek. Equally important? Chris Evans did the same thing in Not Another Teen Movie, and a few years ago, we got a director’s cut of the original. For the record, this can’t be super-hygienic, so to those who like to attempt things from movies — watch yourselves.

Titanic (1997)

Item: A sketchbook

Those four minutes in which Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) drew Rose DeWitt-Bukater (Kate Winslet) added up to “the most erotic moment” of her whole life — up until then, at least. And upon Titanic’s release in 1997, she had a point: The idea of being drawn by a drifter in one’s own hotel room on a boat seemed downright steamy. That is, until we learned it was actually director James Cameron’s hands doing the drawing, which arguably changed and / or ruined the scene for everybody, forever. Sketchbooks are now the equivalent of an acoustic guitar. They don’t impress us much.

Flashdance (1983)

Item: Lobster

Seafood aficionados, try this: In 1983’s Flashdance, Jennifer Beals uses lobster in the art of seduction. She picks it up and eats it with her hands (while wearing a tuxedo) to the merriment and / or arousal of Nick (Michael Nouri), whom she’s on a date with. The good news, they end up together. The bad, you will likely be kicked out of Red Lobster if you try this.

Armageddon (1998)

Item: Animal crackers

Before going off to save the world from an asteroid on a mission, Ben Affleck and his onscreen girlfriend, Liv Tyler, find themselves laying in a field and talking about the logistics of animal crackers. Things then heat up a bit: After unbuttoning her dress and using Tyler’s stomach as the land on which the animal crackers now reside, the two make out — before Ben lifts her in the air, and Aerosmith begins to play. Otherwise known as Liv Tyler’s dad’s band. Which is the sexiest moment of all.

Ghost (1990)

Item: Pottery wheel and / or clay

And here we are. The creme de la creme. The belle of the ball. After a slight disagreement between Demi Moore and Patrick Swazye’s characters, we find Demi making a clay pot on a pottery wheel, as most women tend to do after an argument. Then enter: Patrick, whose affinity for shirtlessness has carried over from Dirty Dancing, and has led him to sitting behind her, helping her do pottery, and effectively also destroying her pot once the two start making out. We don’t want to think about how hard it was to clean that room up, but we do think it beats a young Tony Goldwyn taking his shirt off scenes later, in an attempt to seduce a grieving Demi.
