Facebook Creates Special Filter For Pride Week

In conjunction with Pride Weekend — and, now, this morning's momentous announcement — Facebook is offering a way for its users to show their support for LGBTQ rights. Of course, it'll be in the most Facebook way possible. For a limited time, users can apply a rainbow flag filter to their profile pictures. More than six million people in the U.S. identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or gender non-conforming on Facebook, while almost one million belong to a Facebook group that supports the LGBTQ community. To reflect their rapidly expanding usership, Facebook has begun highlighting stories of individuals within these groups, one of which you can check out here. The filter will be available to members of queer communities and allies alike, making it an accessible and simple way to celebrate the weekend and gay rights activism all around. That being said, we wonder if this feature is enough to amend Facebook's previous missteps with LGBTQ communities. It'd be great to see the site make bigger moves toward inclusivity beyond temporary profile add-ons.
