Rihanna Is Dior’s First Black Spokesperson

She's only 27, but Rihanna has already set plenty of records during her pop star tenure: She had the most No. 1 pop songs in 2013, had the most digital-music sales in 2012, and she boasts the profound ability to wear tomboyish basics like a total boss. Well, everyone's favorite bad girl has just nabbed another honor, and it's a big one. This morning, WWD announced that Rihanna is the latest face of Dior, making the singer the first-ever Black spokeswoman of the French fashion house. Over the years, the company has recruited everyone from Jennifer Lawrence to Natalie Portman to front its campaigns, but the choice of Rihanna marks an important step in Dior's — and fashion's — history. Although designers have recently used their platforms to make statements on gender equality, diversity in campaigns and on the runway has remained lacking. According to WWD, Rihanna will star in the fourth installment of the brand's hugely popular "Secret Garden" videos, in which she'll take over Versailles and frolic through the palace. Keep an eye out for the video and accompanying campaign (shot by Steven Klein) this spring, and in the meantime, we're giving major props to Rihanna. If her past partnerships with Balmain, Puma, and MAC are any indication, this Grammy winner is always ready to make a statement. Only this time, her statement will make history.
