Earlier today, we posited that celebrities going old school by announcing their engagements in newspapers might be a hot new trend. Now, the man who revived the archaic tradition is speaking out about the impetus behind his decision.
People caught up with the newly engaged Benedict Cumberbatch, and asked him about the announcement-heard-'round-the-world, which appeared in The Times of London last week.
"It's what I would have done if I wasn't sort of famous," he told the magazine. "It's what we do. It's a kind of traditional thing to do."

Despite his growing fame, Cumberbatch has resisted the temptation to join social media, so a 140-character message announcing his engagement to theater director Sophie Hunter was never an option. "It's too impersonal," the actor added. "I would rather do what we did, and have people find it, and not see us from some s---ty, grainy footage staring lovingly into each others eyes with a ring on someone's finger. I wanted it to be ours."
People also couldn't help ask Cumberbatch about the prospect of having kids — or "Cumberbabies" as they keenly put it it.
"Oh my God," he said. "Well, my mother is also waiting for Cumberbabies."
And, just like that, a new meme was born (People)
