This Photo Series Is What Dreams Are Made Of

The idea of any dog languishing in an animal shelter is incredibly upsetting. But, when that pooch happens to be a pit bull, the situation is more dire: According to the most recent U.S. shelter data, as many as 967,300 pit bulls were euthanized in 2009.
So, what can we do — aside from, you know, adopting a gaggle of pits? New York City-based photographer Sophie Gamand came up with a very surprising way to spread awareness. Her new series, Flower Power, showcases pit bulls adorned in dreamy floral wreaths (Lana Dog Rey, anyone?). The best part: All of the dogs photographed are currently up for adoption at various shelters in the city.
So, what inspired this act of kindness and creativity? "The series is an invitation to look at pit bulls from a different perspective and with a fresh eye," says Gamand. "It is absurd to judge an entire group based on a few isolated accidents (as horrible and sad as they may be). For every horror story out there, there are just as many wonderful stories."
