Kelis' "Friday Fish Fry" Will Cure Your Monday Blues

comments

At Refinery29, our ethos of discovery means that we are always keeping our ear to the ground, hoping to unearth the very best new artist or an exciting collaboration from a musician we already know and love. That is to say, we take our music very seriously. We don't put our stamp of approval on anything that we wouldn't load directly into our own audio devices first. So, you can trust the excitement we're bubbling over with in sharing a new live video for Kelis' "Friday Fish Fry" off her upcoming sixth studio album, Food (out April 22). Here's what you gotta know:

Who? Kelis, the self-proclaimed "first girl to scream on the track."
How long has she been around? Kelis has been on our radar since 1999 when she sang the hook of Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s "Got Your Money." But, you most likely know her as the chick with the milkshake that brings all the boys to the yard.
What does she sound like? Kelis has tried on many different hats ranging from synth R&B, regular ol' hip-hop, to the futuristic sounds of her last release, Flesh Tone. Food promises a retro vibe packaged in a pretty, contemporary dance beat.
When should you listen to her? Not to go too hard on the Food theme, but "Friday Fish Fry" was made for summer nights and grilling.
If this song was an ice cream flavor, it would be: Peaches and cream with a cherry to top.

Kelis is more a provocateur than your run-of-the-mill musician. She doesn't reinvent herself with each album, but rather comes more and more into her own. Food is, for the first time, a glimmer of the matured, refined, and wholeheartedly in-control Kelis. "Friday Fish Fry," with its brass component and swing elements, is refreshing. The live video below exemplifies the star reborn and what one can expect on her next tour. It's delicious, goes down smooth, and will leave you satisfied but craving more. Luckily, KCRW is providing a cure for the craving this Friday when it airs Kelis' full performance. Tune in here.
