If there's one thing we can glean from a recently published report showing the 10 most common professions in the U.S., it's this: We're a country of consumers.
According to the The Bureau of Labor Statistics, the top three most common jobs in the country are salespeople, cashiers, and fast food workers, all jobs rooted in the selling of goods. Unfortunately, jobs in the retail industry also tend to be among the lowest paying in the country. The average annual salary in the U.S. is $46,440, but workers in the retail industry take home a paltry $25,000 or less. In fact, of all of the jobs that made the list, nine of the 10 are on the low-paying end of things. Registered nurses, and their average annual salary of $70,000, are the lone exception.
The jobs rounding out the list include waiters and waitresses, office clerks, customer service reps, laborers, secretaries, and janitors, positions that make up 21 percent of the total workforce. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the most lucrative fields are management, law, architecture, and engineering.
