There aren't too many "rights" or "wrongs" when it comes to style. It's all personal, and we each deserve to express ourselves in whatever way we choose. With that said, we've seen plenty of wrongs within the fashion industry, but Barneys New York's new ad campaign is giving us hope. Lensed by the incomparable Bruce Weber, the images for the spring '14 campaign feature a group of transgender models, both male and female. And, the black-and-white snaps are as stunning as they are inspiring.
Named "Brothers, Sisters, Sons and Daughters," the Barneys project was completed in tandem with the National Center for Transgender Equality and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center, as reported by WWD. While the major luxury retailer has seen its share of negative press over the past few months, this recent reveal is something worth celebrating. It captures the transgender community in an earnest, beautiful way. Sure, these models are selling the clothes — among them, J. Mendel dresses and Manolo Blahniks — but the images are much more than a marketing ploy. And, with 10% of the sales placed on February 11 at Barneys flagship stores and online donated to the associated LGBT organizations, we're happy to see the retailer supporting the cause for awareness and celebration beyond just the still shots.
