6 Editors, 6 Getaways, & What To Pack For Each

Over the past few weeks, we've begrudgingly gotten back into our fitness routine (sore muscles, ahoy!), laid off the holiday season's many sugary treats (tear), dived right back into our hectic work schedule, and survived the polar vortex. Yes, it's been quite the month. But, let’s face it: January is definitely the Debbie Downer of the calendar year. And, while we don't want all of that discipline and willpower to go to waste, a relaxing weekend getaway might be just what we need to soothe away those pesky winter blues. That, plus copious amounts of chamomile tea, a doughnut, and maybe a full-body massage. Okay, and definitely a five-star spa treatment — who are we kidding?
So, if you're also hankering for a little extra R and R, we're sharing six spirit-boosting travel recommendations straight from our local R29 editors. Yep, there's a countryside B and B, a rad ski-lodge destination, an ah-mazing mineral-pool spa, and more — and they can also be yours for the booking. After all, staying close to home does have its perks. You've got all the trappings of a tip-top vacation but without the worry and hassle of flight delays, lost luggage, or jet lag. So, how about it? A work-free, computer-less, indulgent two-night stay at one of our staffer's personal faves. If only they packed for us... Oh, wait — they did that, too.

Annie Georgia Greenberg, style editor
Destination: Stowe Mountain Lodge, V.T.

"Every year, my friends and I take a long weekend for a ski vacation. We rent out a house and pile in as many people as we can fit. It usually ends up that we spend as much time in the cabin or in the house playing games and drinking cocoa as we do on the slopes, but it's definitely a time of activity, either way. So, I want to stay comfortable (and moisturized!) for the weekend. I usually pack one to-the-brim roller bag, a sweatshirt to wear and re-wear each day, slippers to put on as soon as I slip off my ski boots, and, of course, moisturizer to combat the wind on the lifts."

Annie’s Packing List:
"I'm 50% Canadian but 100% in love with these knee-high slippers."
Urban Outfitters Mukluk Slipper Sock, $29.99, available at Urban Outfitters.

"A good-looking rolling carry-on bag? I didn't know you existed! Be mine. Now."

J.Crew Weekend Skinny Sweatpant, $69.50, available at J.Crew.

Angela Tafoya, San Francisco editor
Destination: Calistoga, C.A.

“What I love about visiting wine country's Calistoga in the wintertime — aside from a trip to some top wineries like Tamber Bey — is Indian Springs Resort and Spa. The Olympic-sized natural mineral pools are so soothing, and it's a major perk that you can lounge in them any time of the year. Plus, the detoxifying mud bath is a must! After a dip in here, my skin feels SO renewed. Wine, spa, and a trip to 1226 Washington for a bite — pure bliss.”

Angela’s Packing List:
“This roomy dress is warm and easy to slip on after a day of lounging in the mineral pools!”
ace&jig Chorus Dress Houndstooth, $248, available at select ace&jig stockists.

“You can't go wrong with a pair of black jeans. They're a great casual addition to sport to dinner.”

Holly Thomas, Washington, D.C. editor
Destination: Bedford Springs, P.A.

"My most relaxing vacation, ever, happened at the Omni Bedford Springs Resort. The natural mineral spas are incredible, and you can literally spend all day soaking in the different pools. The hotel is grand and beautiful, and there's tons of great thrifting, antiquing, hiking, and outdoorsy adventuring to be done in the area. But, if you want to spend your whole time exploring the 30,000-square-foot spa facility, no one will mind."

Holly’s Packing List:
"A classy spa warrants a swimwear upgrade — this is not the best place for your teensiest triangle bikini. Opt for a sleek one-piece that brings out your inner pinup but still feels modern."
Mara Hoffman Shakti Bandeau Swimsuit, $220, available at Net-A-Porter.

"Skip the skinny jeans, and opt for comfy, flowy pants. That'll make it easy to go from your hotel room to the spa and back with minimal fuss."
Topshop Dark Floral Block Cigarette Trousers, $76, available at Topshop.

"Take advantage of the resort's fire pit (and s'mores!) by bundling up in a cozy sweater, grabbing a hot cocktail, and settling in around the fire."
Vince Textured-Knit Draped Cardigan, $487, available at MatchesFashion.com.

"A simple, slip-on sandal is ideal for pairing with your spa robe and swimsuit. Bonus: You'll get tons of use out of these during the summer, too."
Joie Sable Sandal, $135, available at Piperlime.

"Now that your muscles are relaxed and your skin is glowing, the maintenance is up to you. Hold up your end of the healthy-living bargain by resolving to stay fully hydrated."
Lifefactory Glass Bottle with Silicone Sleeve, $26.99, available at Lifefactory.

Ali Hoffman, Los Angeles editor
Destination: Joshua Tree, C.A.

"Not far from the lacquered, ultra-stylized Palm Springs lives its nonconformist, hippie brother, Joshua Tree. It's the perfect marriage of sparse, unobstructed desert land and copious artistic colonies filled with architects, musicians, writers, and open-door homes. And, it's the perfect place to escape from L.A. — whether you need to clear your mind or restore your creativity."

Ali's Packing List:
"Soft, slouchy jeans are essential. You don't want to be sitting in tough, skintight denim for the three-hour drive there."
rag & bone/JEAN Skinny Capri Jean, $220, available at La Garçonne.

"Leave the cat-eye pair home, and opt for these timeless, Steve McQueen-driving-up-the-California-coast sunnies."
J.Crew Garrett Leight Brooks Sunglasses in Java, $375, available at J.Crew.

"The perfectly sized weekend bag is hard to come by. Everlane nailed it with this sucker."
Everlane The Weekender Solid Blue Ash, $95, available at Everlane.

"The ideal, cozy sweater for those chilly desert nights."
Stella McCartney Textured Wool-Mohair Sweater, $370, available at MatchesFashion.com.

Emily London, London editor
Destination: Hotel Tresanton, St. Mawes, Cornwall

“When my soul and body are weary and I’ve had all I can take of London, I jump on a train and hotfoot it to St. Mawes in Cornwall. It’s a seaside village that is almost picture-perfect in its beauty. If you love hiking, ye olde pubs, delicious seafood, and even antiquing, then this village is the one for you. And, the best place to stay when you’re down there is the Hotel Tresanton. The boutique hotel is the perfect mix of low-key glamour (the suites are to die for), attentive service, and ah-mazing food. Seriously, if I could live there all year round, I would. But, since that's not a reality, I would make do with a long weekend every six months. For real. “

Emily’s Packing List:
“When I’m in Cornwall, I want to be outside, whatever the weather. This Canada Goose parka will let me have my day on the beach even in the stormiest of weather.”
Canada Goose Chateau Coyote-Trimmed Parka Jacket, $695, available at Mr Porter.

“I’m not a huge denim fan, but when I go to Cornwall, it’s pretty much all I wear. Topshop’s signature Baxter style is my favorite to run around in.”
Topshop Moto Blue Black Baxter Jeans, $80, available at Topshop.

“Cashmere jumpers are my weakness. This flourescent style is the perfect colorful complement to the lo-fi looks I favor when I’m down there.”
Uniqlo Cashmere Round Neck Relaxed Sweater, $59.90, available at Uniqlo.

“I tend to leave my makeup bag at home when I visit St. Mawes, but I like to wear a little blush to give my urban pallor a hint of health until the sea breeze and Cornish air revives it.”
Daniel Sandler Watercolor Fluid Blusher, $24.02, available at Cult Beauty.

“A crossbody bag is essential for a vacation spent hiking, sightseeing, and antiquing. I don’t leave the hotel without it.”
ASOS Leather Mini Cross Body Bag, $74.08, available at ASOS.

"Trainers and wellies are the shoes of choice in St. Mawes. These Nikes will see me through from day to night in style. Just watch me go rock-pooling in them!"
Nike Dunk Sky Hi Vintage Sneakers, $150, similar style available at Barneys New York.

Rebecca Taras, Chicago editor
Destination: Galena, I.L.

"An experience in Galena really is like stepping back into time. But, make no mistake: Just because this town is riddled with historic charm doesn't mean it's a snooze fest. Main Street is filled with adorable little shops, the restaurant scene has really picked up over the past few years, history buffs will love General Grant's home, and there are plenty of outdoor recreational activities (skiing, hiking, snowmobiling), making it a destination to be enjoyed by just about everyone. When it comes to lodging, you’ll find an abundance of B and Bs to choose from as well as resort-style accommodations for those looking for more amenities."

Rebecca’s Packing List:
"It's all about being casual and letting loose in Galena, so a good pair of jeans is key."
Weekend By MaxMara Nyssa Mid-Rise Skinny Jeans, $218, available at MatchesFashion.com.

"You'll want to spend most of your time outdoors, so bundling up is essential!"
Samuji Green Wool Jumper, $185, available at Avenue 32.

"Since you'll be going in and out of shops, the faux hood on this coat will keep you warm while avoiding hat head at the same time."
Zara Duffle Coat With Faux-Fur Hood, $99.99, available at Zara.

"This bag is large enough to carry all of your travel essentials but without compromising style or weighing down your shoulder."
French Connection Adored Cord Cross-Body Bag, $78, available at Nordstrom.

"You're going to be doing a lot of walking around, so save the heels for dinner!"
Sole Society Natasha Round Toe Boot, $39.98, available at Sole Society.
