    Though it might not have seemed so, 2013 was one of the biggest years for shoe trends in recent history. And, before you laugh that statement off, consider this: Birkenstocks made a comeback. If that doesn't foreshadow some big, ideological changes happening with aspirational aesthetics, we don't know what does.

    In 2013, the shoe world's ugly ducklings had their moment in the sun and ruled the racks alongside the super stilettos that've traditionally been considered the "shoe obsessive's" footwear of choice. With lug soles, Jesus sandals, and running shoes selling out at the same rates as pointed Mary Janes, gilded heels, and thigh-high boots, this year was definitely a battle of yin and yang, dark and light, goofy and gorgeous.
