Red Eyeshadow Is Wearable, Pat McGrath Shows Us How

We like to think we're equal-opportunity makeup lovers, but we've had a hard time incorporating certain shades into our regularly scheduled beauty routines. Take, for instance, red eye makeup: While it looks amazing on our darker-complexioned staffers, those of us with fair skin have a difficult time finding a way to wear it without looking like we're slowly wasting away from some super-virus.
We've been burned so many times by makeup artists telling us that, yes, we can wear red, only to try it and then be asked repeatedly if we're contagious. Then, like a makeup fairy godmother, Pat McGrath came along and made everything amazing, as she has a habit of doing.
We sat in on a master class with the talented pro where she showed us exactly how she created the wine-hued smoky eye that Scarlett Johansson sports in the fall '13 Dolce & Gabbana makeup ads. Keep clicking to get the scoop on this bordeaux beauty look.

McGrath started by applying The Khol Pencil Intense in Dahlia, a plummy purple, and smudged it underneath the eyes. She then took The Eyeshadow Smooth Eye Colour Quad in Vulcano and smudged that over the top of the pencil. According to McGrath, by combining the purple with the red, it created a more wearable, multi-dimensional red that doesn't cause that sickly cast.
To finish the eye, McGrath swept the gold shade from the palette across the lid, then did some light contouring using the darker shades. She then added a light touch of black liquid liner along the lashline for definition. To balance out the red up top, she stuck to soft pink shades on the cheeks and lips. And, that, dear friends, is how you rock a burgundy red eye.
Would you rock the red-eye look?
