Johanna Fateman's work is an embodiment of everything we love in life: riot grrrl-style feminism, post-punk music, and really, really good hair.
As a former member of the beloved electroclash band Le Tigre (along with Kathleen Hanna and JD Samson) and the current co-owner of Seagull, one of the edgiest hair salons in NYC, Fateman's name has long been on our list of women we'd like to be. So, when she invited us into her salon to talk about everything from her personal beauty icons to how her politics inform her style, let's just say that we tried hard to play it cool.
As for Seagull, the inside was exactly what we'd hoped for. A framed picture of Gloria Steinem sits on a shelf next to pastel-colored hair products, the walls are pink brick, and the bathroom is filled with signed photos of our heroes. As for Fateman herself? Her quirky vintage style, vibrant lipstick, and surprisingly soft-spoken nature thoroughly solidified our respect for her.
Read on to learn how this self-identified "cool mom" navigates the hair world as a rockstar/feminist icon.
