4 Spooky-Chic Outfits For London's Best Halloween Soirees

If Mean Girls is correct (and we're inclined to think it is), Halloween is just an excuse to dress up in skimpy polyester costumes and play beer pong. Hmmm, that's not quite our thing. We’d much rather have photographs (and memories) we can look back on with pride. So naturally, style is number one on the agenda when it comes to planning the perfect, creative get-up for this haunted holiday.
As usual, our fair city is bursting with offbeat celebrations that provide us with plenty of opportunities to dress up. We know all the ghoulish get-togethers — from Bacchanalian balls to circus-inspired shindigs — that will send chills down your spine (in the best way). Plus, we've got the chic (and scary) outfits to match. Cue evil laugh!

The Dark Circus Party Halloween Special
Belle Epoque’s Dark Circus Party is back for Halloween and, frankly, you’d be silly to miss it. It's an absinthe-drenched, smoky, slightly naughty evening — one of over-the-top productions that have engulfed the capital’s entertainment scene of late. The party is the evil brainchild of cocktail connoisseurs Bourne & Hollingsworth and fetish club Torture Garden. Their troupe of aerialists and contortionists will hang from the ceilings, while you delve deeper into a world of (fairly sensible) depravity. If the Moulin Rouge was brought back for one night, this would surely be it. Go to town with your accessories and match your lipstick to your chandelier earrings for a vampish effect.

Future Cinema presents Ghostbusters
Future Cinema (part of the Secret Cinema group) is known for its full-throttle interpretations of the experiential cinema scene, so we can only imagine what they will come up with this time for its Ghostbusters-inspired Hallows' Eve bash. A 20-foot-tall marshmallow man? Bill Murray as a guest star? A real-life re-creation of Gozer’s gateway on the roof of East London’s Troxy? Er, possibly not. But, there will be paranormal-activity hunting, SFX, and installation pieces from Central Saint Martins students. Bring your proton pack (y’know, if you have one), your suspension of disbelief, and, whatever you do, don’t cross the streams. In the mood to dress up? Make like Janine Melnitz and work some '80s magic into your look. Think day-glo accessories, oversized glasses, and a skintight knit.

What: Future Cinema presents Ghostbusters
Where: The Troxy, 490 Commercial Road, London, E1 0HX
When: October 31 and November 22, 23, and 24

Halloween Movie Mash-Up Weekend
Do you still want to celebrate, but fancy something a little more low-key? Creative duo Tees and Cees are screening three of the best Halloween cult classics in the Portobello Pop-Up Cinema. Nightmare on Elm Street is showing on Friday, Rocky Horror Picture Show on Saturday (a sing and dance-along, no less), and Halloween on Sunday. A themed menu will be offered, along with a dressing-up box (obviously), pumpkin carving, and apple bobbing to complete the comfortingly traditional evening. We’ll be there, up the front, unashamedly doing all the moves to "The Time Warp." At least we’ll be wearing Kenzo jeans. Join us?

The Last Tuesday Society’s Danse Macabre
You know an evening is going to be epic when there is the option of downloading a map of the festivities. Last Tuesday’s "two Halloween balls of the utmost magnificence" included ten stages, a full symphony orchestra, and a Trans-Siberian marching band. Oh, but there's more: a grand ballroom, circus, cinema, and dungeon complete the picture. The Society's weird and wonderful creativity is fully realized at this feast for the senses. Think: Bacchanalian orgies; Bosch’s "Garden of Earthly Delights" brought to life; and a parade of extreme costumes. Forget yourself for one night and embrace hedonism. This dizzying experience is not to be forgotten.

What: The Last Tuesday Society’s Danse Macabre
Where: The Coronet Picture Palace, 28 New Kent Road, London, SE1 6TJ
When: October 25 and 26
