How did you get into professional styling?
Tara Swennen: "I went to Cornell University and majored in design, but when I met my first stylist, Andrea Lieberman, while interning in the studio services department at Barney's New York, I fell in love and fell into the business."
J Brand leather pants, Splendid white tee, French Connection light pink blazer.
These Valentino rock-stud heels are everything.
When you're not styling, what would we catch you doing?
"I hang out with my friends, my dog Pepper, and my daughter Jordan. We are big travelers."
We're not sure if we're more in love with that bag or Pepper the Pug, but the combination of the two is perfect.
Where do you like to shop in L.A.?
"I love Les Pommettes and Curve on Robertson, Barney's NY, Roseark, and Theory."
Monica Chang pants, Rachel Roy tunic, Valentino clutch, Brian Atwood heels.
Tara takes accessories as seriously as we do. From this seriously cool clutch....
...to a seriously stunning pair of wine-hued pumps.
You've styled for Mila Kunis, KStew, Miley Cyrus, and many other celebrities, all of whom have such different personalities. How do you manage to pull looks that are all on-trend, yet still accommodate such diverse people?
TS: "My philosophy is all about letting a client's personality shine through their looks, so I incorporate trends that fit not only their figures, but also their attitudes."
What's more important when choosing a red-carpet look: functionality or that wow factor?
"I think they go hand-in-hand if you play your cards right! The key is making the person feel beautiful, and then they will shine!"
Any personal style choices or fashion risks you've taken, that you look back on and regret?
"Not at all! That's the beauty of fashion — it's an art form that's ever evolving. It's all about experimenting and exploring new things!"
At what moment did you realize you had made it as a professional stylist?
"When I styled a fashion show for Oprah and her producer came to me and said, 'Please don't be upset if she sends the models back and asks you to change everything. In 21 years of this I have never seen anyone not go through it.' Then the models came back, and no changes needed. I had been the first!"
Oscar de la Renta dress, Chloé trench, Tibi heels.
We love a mix of high-low fashion. What's a cheap thrill you've found recently?
"My Max Mara black trench."
The arm party's got nothin' on Swennen's chic set of rings.
XIV Kts wedding bands and rose gold pinky ring, Dana Rebecca long gold and diamond ring, Balenciaga gold rings.
This shark tooth necklace has real bite.
What's your favorite thing about L.A.?
"The Rosebowl flea market out here is a guilty pleasure of mine. I find everything from clothes, accessories, and furniture there!"
A.L.C black and tan dress, Christian Louboutin boots, Kate Spade bag.
