Madewell’s Fall Lookbook Brings Back Shearling Zip-Ups & Vans Slip-Ons

The thing we love about Madewell is that it somehow exists beyond trends. While there is the occasional seasonal buy-in (the slight peplum, the printed trouser, the metal-tipped collar), the brand usually stays pretty classic with its pieces. So, the thing that makes its catalogs so exceptional isn't necessarily the clothes itself, but the styling. Somehow, each season's wares feel so fresh and so novel, and that's mainly accomplished through some genius clothing combinations.
The fall '13 catalog is a prime example. Full of real-life styling tips, the outfits will make you feel like the best dressed person in the room, and not someone in a "fashion" costume, aimlessly loitering outside Lincoln Center. The key to chic doesn't even lie in owning statement pieces or daring silhouettes — chances are you already own most of the fall '13 wardrobe — it's about mixing and matching pieces in thoughtful and unexpected ways. Checkered Vans and work trousers, a silk camisole and a thick sweater tied around your waist, simple pumps worn with a shearling zip-up à la Patagonia. You might have to do a little closet diving or thrift-store scavanging (or, if you want the crème de la crème, Madewell browsing), but as this fall lookbook proves, it's well worth the effort.
