Google's Silly Mishap On Twitter Is Actually Hilarious

Google's forays into social media have been a bit of a mixed bag, but the latest misstep for the generally beloved tech giant is more hilarious than anything else. For a recent Twitter contest promoting the new Google Glass, users were invited to share what they'd do with the new technology using the hashtag #IfIHadGlass. One would think they'd reward only the most aspiring, Google-positive responses to be so-called #glassexplorers and get a chance to buy the specs before the rest of the world, but apparently 8,000 winners were too much to manage (understandably). NYMag noticed that many of the selected winners were, to say the least, not exactly on-brand:

That's just one of several pranksters who found themselves on the winning side of a joke, tracked down by The Daily Intelligencer and several other sites. Since notifying the winners, Google has realized its error and backtracked, telling those cynical winners that their entries actually didn't comply with terms of service and would thus be disqualified. "We need honest feedback from people who are not only enthralled and excited by Glass, but also people who are skeptical and critical of it," the company said in a post on Google+. "That said, it’s become clear that a few applications that don’t comply with our terms have slipped through the cracks, and we’re going to have to disqualify applications like these."
