WATCH: Tavi Gevinson Is A Character...In Graphic-Novel Form

Imagine Tavi Gevinson, Back To The Future's Christopher Lloyd (yep, Doc Brown, himself), and Academy Award-winner Kathy Bates, starring in a short film. Cool, right? Now, imagine them as animated characters reciting a poignant poem telling a bittersweet love story. Epic, we know. Here, we have Cadaver, the poem turned short film turned graphic novel, written and directed by Jonah Ansell. We talked about this project a few months ago, but soon, Cadaver will be screened at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago on April 23, with Rookie mag's editor-in-chief and her longtime friend Ansell, there to discuss the project in person.
In the macabre film, reminiscent of Tim Burton's more ghoulish works, a young medical student (Gevinson) narrates her adventure with a risen cadaver (Lloyd) in search of his beloved wife. While the story is heart-wrenching ("And, in his eyes, I see a glance, a kid begging for one more chance"), the unexpected ending and Gevinson's cheeky delivery ("This morning he was in a freezer, and now I'm talking to this geezer") provides seven minutes of morbid whimsy that both Edgar Allen Poe and Shakespeare, cynics and hopeless romantics, can enjoy. But, don't just take our word for it, watch the critically acclaimed flick yourself, right here.
When: Tuesday, April 23 at 6 p.m.
Where: MCA, 220 E Chicago Avenue (at Lincoln); 312-397-4010.
