Who’s the next super-big San Francisco blogger? Our money’s on Kathleen Murillo of Inspirafashion, a Berkeley-based gal wise well beyond her years, especially sartorially speaking. With each post on her site, the Cal psychology major continues to impress us with her quirky mix of vintage and high-low goods. Plus, Murillo’s to-die-for nouveau hippie mane consistently makes us swoon. Just what are this stylish lady’s go-to summer ensembles fit for the Bay Area’s notoriously bipolar season? How would you describe your style?
"I'm drawn to feminine and romantic pieces like these lace shorts from H&M. I decided to wear it with my crochet H&M sweater, which really shows how addicted I am to anything bohemian. Being thrifty is a big part of my style and I scored this ivory vinyl bag from Goodwill."
What's the inspiration behind this blue ensemble?
"I thought the American Apparel top would be perfect for summer in the Bay Area, since it's very light and sheer, but has long sleeves. I added some height with my Forever 21 boots and the asymmetrical skirt by Sway lets me play around with different lengths. For a dash of another color, I wore my light brown H&M fringe bag."
What's your philosophy when it comes to accessorizing?
"I love to treat jewelry like clothing. Since I wouldn't pair leopard with zebra print, I try to match gold with gold, silver with silver, and play with texture. I love bright colors and turquoise is one of my favorites. I also absolutely love playing with fun nail polish colors. Recently it's been mint green, lilac, and other pastels."
Who are your style icons?
"First off, my mom! She was the first person to bring me to a thrift store, which definitely influences my style today. Other people I really admire are Mary-Kate Olsen and Kate Bosworth. I love how Mary-Kate has a grungy yet classy style and mixes Chanel with vintage pieces and messy beach hair. And Kate Bosworth isn't afraid to switch-up classic outfits with more daring looks. I'm also a movie buff, so I get more of my inspiration there. I loved Zooey Deschanel's innocent and sweet style in 500 Days of Summer. It inspired me to go out and visit more vintage shops."
What summer trends are you loving?
"Definitely floppy hats! Not only do they protect my face from the sun, but they also add a nice flare to any outdoor look."
What are your must-hit spots in Berkeley?
"Cheeseboard has amazing vegetarian pizzas with a unique set-up of having only one flavor per day. Chaat Cafe on University Avenue has the best Indian food I've ever tasted. I always get the samosas, paneer pakora, and tikka masala. And I have a big sweet tooth, so Love at First Bite is the perfect place to visit whenever I have a red velvet cupcake craving."
