This Is Our Jam: Azealia Banks, “Liquorice”

Part of what made “212” one the best tracks of the year was Azealia Banks’ ability to make Lazy Jay’s already-great electro beat her own. With “Liquorice,” Banks takes on a a very different backing track (the rave-ready techno of Lone’s “Pineapple Crush”), as she dares a dude to make a move with yet another oral sex come-on: “Bet ya really wanna touch up on the molasses ass / bet ya really wanna tongue up on her kizzat today, cause her kizzat shaved.”
It’s Banks' trademarked cute/crass combo in full force, flowing by at supersonic speed. Yet, while “Liquorice” may not be as polished as “212,” the track showcases Banks’ ability to spit over anything she can get a hold of (and sing a mean hook to boot). When Banks announced last week on Twitter that she had just got an email from Kanye West, it made fans giddy with the possibilities. Hearing “Liquorice” is further evidence that Banks is primed to explode.
