Steep Thoughts: Can The Future Be Told Through Your Tea?

It's a question we frequently ask ourselves: What does our future look like? Curious, we sought out established intuitive reader Carolyn of Astrology Boutique to give three Chicago tastemakers (with completely different backgrounds) a glimpse of what's to come. But forget about using a crystal ball or deck of tarot cards. These power players each received a tea reading to determine their destinies — even if only for entertainment purposes only.
So, how does it work? You start out by choosing one of three teas. "Without overthinking it, I tell my clients to choose the one that they are most gravitated toward," says Carolyn. Next, you take two-to-three heaping teaspoons of tea and place it into a tea cup, while thinking about two scenarios you'd like to focus on in your life. After that, boiling water is poured over the leaves, and they are left to steep for a few minutes while you collect your thoughts. Then, it's time for the reading to begin!

So, what does an intuitive reader like Carolyn look for? A certain symbol amongst the leaves, while also taking note of where the symbol is in the cup and how thick it is. Now, before you start staring into your own tea cup attempting to predict what the universe has in store, keep in mind that Carolyn has been doing this for over 25 years, and her "psychic abilities" are inherent from her grandmother.
Now, without further ado, find out if our three tastemakers' results rang true. Click through to see if their readings were fact or fiction. Trust, this is one heck of a tea party.

Carolyn actually has two locations, but the location on Division Street (where we met) is where she lives as well. She conducts all readings in a front "boutique area" separate from her pad. We suggest this location because it's also close to a lot of great restaurants. How's that for a fun girls' night out?

Astrology Boutique, 1657 West Division Street (between Marshfield Avenue and Paulina Street); 773-276-7424.

Have you ever had a tea or any other type of reading before?
"No, I’m always up for the spontaneous and trying something new. When Refinery29 reached out, I was intrigued and, of course, said yes, right away."

What were your expectations going into the tea reading?
"I didn’t have any expectations (good or bad) going into the tea reading. To be honest, I never knew anything even existed. The best experiences in life should be gone into without any expectation. Allow yourself to be surprised."

What can you share with us about your reading?
"She touched on friendships, career, love/relationships, family. Let’s just say, I told her nothing going into the reading except for my selection of black tea poured from an ornate tea kettle I had purchased in Morocco. She was spot on, with specific examples in my life, and offered some great insight and foresight."

What really stood out to you when getting your reading?
"I’m turning 30 this year, a pretty defining birthday (at least to me) and I’m excited for all that’s in store in the next couple of years. We had an open, candid, and honest conversation. After she shared my reading, I was able to ask questions back, and she shared even more perspective."

What type of person would you recommend this type of reading to?
"I would recommend a tea reading for anyone looking for a second opinion or clarity on a specific matter. We live in a society beset with noise and other people’s opinions. Sometimes, in order to see through the murky water (or for a tea reading, tea leaves) we need an outside source, a third party, to non-emotionally offer advice to us. Clear the clutter and just listen. I’m a glass-half-full-kind-of-girl, so going into the reading; I had an open mind and heart and was pleasantly surprised. Here’s to 30!"

Have you ever had a tea or any other type of reading before?
"Yes! I actually have been to a couple of psychics prior to meeting Carolyn. I’ve always thought that it was a fun and unique experience! I don’t tend to take things too literally, but I think it offers a fresh perspective on situations or experiences that you maybe wouldn’t have considered before."

What were your expectations going into the tea reading?
"I really thought my reading would be a lot about my business and professional life. My reading ended up being significantly about my romantic life. I was not expecting that at all so I was really shocked, and I think I still am a little shocked!"

What can you share with us about your reading?
"The reading was primarily about an ex-boyfriend, and Carolyn knew specific details about it that just blew me away, and I totally didn’t see it coming! She also knew that I was very close to my dad, that my family was super-supportive of my career, and that another relationship had dissolved in the past year that wasn’t a positive one. She also said that I was always meant to be doing what I’m doing!"

What really stood out to you when getting your reading?
"Carolyn was really able to give accurate readings of who I am as a person supported by pretty specific examples. Anyone that knows me knows that I’m pretty type A, and she knew that I like to be in control and that I can never stop overthinking about things. Those are two things my best friend and business partner always teases me about."

"And like I mentioned before, she also knew a lot of specific details regarding a previous boyfriend that really took me by surprise. Carolyn is so nice and makes you feel comfortable, which is a huge comfort when doing something like this."

What type of person would you recommend this type of reading to?
"I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a new and fresh perspective! I think it's good to always take readings with a grain of salt and realize that it might not be the set future, but rather, more of a guideline. I do believe that everything happens for a reason though."

Rachel De Marte: owner of Rachel De Marte, LLC

Have you ever had a tea or any other type of reading before?
"No, I've never done anything like this before! I've been at events that have this sort of thing, but I'm usually working (planning, catering, etc.). I've also had groups of girlfriends go, but I've just never made it a priority — though I've always been intrigued."

What were your expectations going into the tea reading?
"I was super-curious about how much she'd know. It really surprised me that the random things she mentioned were so dead on! I also wondered what she'd question me about, and how the conversation would flow. She wasn't as invasive as I thought — meaning I assumed there'd be a slew of questions. But it was more of a reading (imagine that!) where she told a story about me. It was like I was listening to her read the Book of Rachel."

What can you share with us about your reading?
"She mentioned a couple of things that were out of left field — and so, so accurate!" She mentioned my mom had been sick (heart attack) and that I need to get over the things my sister and I argue about (so true). She also mentioned I was going to live a long happy life, with no signs of divorce. As a child of divorce, one loves to hear that!"

"She talked about my new venture (my business and my new husband/wife biz) and its success (awesome!). Then she threw in three kids — and sooner than I had planned. Yikes! I was thinking two and my husband tries to negotiate one. Funnily enough, I had four in my head for a long time, and now two seems ideal. So…three, huh?"

What really stood out to you when getting your reading?
"As I was sitting there, I was thinking, 'Do I nod yes, or keep poker face, or share?!' I kept pretty quiet, but did share when she mentioned things she couldn't possibly know. It's crazy. Her lovely sharing demeanor was so welcoming. Ideal in her field, I'd imagine."

What type of person would you recommend this type of reading to?
"Anyone! It really provides some serious insight. I didn't expect she'd cover so many things. I left feeling happy, relieved, and intrigued. I'd do it again, but I like what I heard and I'll stick with that! I do think if you're at a place in your life where there's change/transition/heartache, etc, than this may offer a bit of clarity, relief, and comfort."
