Classy (Not Trashy) Ways To Wear Glittery Makeup

Like a magpie to a shiny trinket, we're just drawn to shimmer makeup. Glittery lips, metallic eyes, and luminescent skin all send us into fits of twinkling delight. Unfortunately, it’s all too easy to overdo it on the razzle and dazzle — too much and you wind up looking like a lost relic of Studio 54. To help keep your sparkly holiday makeup classy, not trashy, we enlisted Janice Daoud, NARS' national makeup stylist. Here, she shares her best shimmer makeup dos and don’ts. Read on to get schooled in the adult way to get your glitter on.

Shimmer eyeshadow can be both dramatic and delicate — it all depends on the application. For a more demure look, Daoud says to sweep shadow onto your eyelids to create a wash of shiny color. "A dab on the eyes is all you need to open up and brighten your entire face," she says. Keep the color just on your lids — don't extend it to your browbone. Instead apply a taupe matte shadow into your crease and line lids with black liquid liner.

For a bolder look, like the one seen here at the 3.1 Phillip Lim fall '11 show, use a wet metallic shimmer shadow or shimmer eyeliner to create a geometric shape that extends across the crease of the eye. Add tons of mascara for intensity, but keep the rest of your lid bare, to accentuate the edgy, graphic look. "This is a great modern twist to classic eyeliner that will keep you current and edgy," says Daoud.

A dark, dazzling lip, as seen on the lovely ladies at Peter Som, is a gorgeous way to get glitzed; Daoud says shimmer adds dimension to your lips, making them look more pouty. If dark lips aren't your thing, Daoud suggests trying a nude shimmer lipstick — it's subtle without being snoozy.

If you're looking for something a bit more outside the box, try layering a berry hue on top of the nude to create a subtler shimmer and the illusion of a fuller mouth. Add a high-shine gloss to the center of your lips for an extra hit of sparkle.

The easiest way to add a bit of bling to your skin is to mix a loose shimmer powder in with your moisturizer or foundation. This will give your skin a lively, radiant glow. Just don't OD on the luminizer, or your skin will look frosted.

For a healthy glow, Daoud says to apply a shimmer highlighter on the cheekbones, temples, and down the center of the nose to reflect light and add “jewels” to the face. "The golden rule is to keep the shimmer on the high points of the face, and try not to overdo it with shimmer shadow, liner, and lipstick all at once or you’ll end up looking like a disco ball," she says. Instead, pair your glowy skin with a neutral blush, a barely-there shadow, and a matte lip, for a sophisticated look that still sparkles.
