Shop It NowThe Guy's Guide To Perfect Hair
We've shown you how to style the perfect updo. Make great waves. Heck, even how to use hot rollers. But—until now—we've haven't given follicle advice for the fellas. Our male readers (and their girlfriends/sisters/BFFs) have emailed us piles and piles of questions about hair styling 101. And here's what we learned: Guys are scared of product. They don't want to look too done. And they're not really sure what to ask for once they're in that chair. But boys, you can go to a professional stylist and use product without looking like you came from the Jersey Shore.
So, we hit up eight real, good-looking NYC guys to dish on all their hair tips. From a photographer who uses hand lotion instead of gel to a professional barber whose pointers will help you figure out exactly what you want, and how to get it, these real men let us pick their brain—inside and, uh, out.
Man Buns: Hipster Hot Or Just Plain Strange?
Okay, we're not embarrassed to say that we go weak in the knees for that shaggy, grown-out hair that hipster men can cultivate so well. After years of the "metro" aesthetic, shows like Bored to Death, and all things Williamsburg seeping into the national consciousness, men's hair, in general, is longer. So long, in fact, that it necessitates some means of getting it out of your smokin'-hipster-man face. Hot weather, functionality, and FDA health codes all contribute to rise of a new and slightly confusion trend: the man-bun.
After all, no one wants to pull out a long blond hair from their vegan organic burdock-root-and-shiitake soup, because that’s nasty, no matter how gorgeous the hair-shedder is.
So, what’s the consensus on man-buns? We have to say, we're torn: On the one hand, Olivier Theyskens pulls the high-on-the-head bun off better than most of the chicks we know. On the other hand: If we see one more bun comprised of hipster dreadlocks, we are going to have to resist the urge to buy a razor and slice it off. But enough about us? What are your thoughts on the trend? Weigh in in the comments. And in the meantime, we just have to hope that the boys don’t figure out that irresistible beauty secret of high bun = no shower. Hair Extensions PSA: You Did It Wrong If You Look Like Your Dog

Hair extensions can be a wonderful thing — in moderation. They're definitely great if you need a little extra volume, or want to add some extra-length when your stylist gets a little scissor-happy. But the key to extensions is that they should look natural — ideally, you don't want anyone else to know they're there. Unfortunately, SO.CAP.USA (the leader in hair extensions, naturally) didn't quite get the memo when they were designing their new line of add-on locks, called SHE. Although they've used "hand-selected, 100% European-type human hair" and employed a team of "specialized research chemists, engineers, and hair extensionists" to create their strands, we're thinking they strayed a little too far from "au natural" and ended up in major WTF territory. While we're not entirely sure what "European-type" means, or why chemists and hair extentionists (is that a real job?) were necessary for this endeavor, we do know that we find the gray extensions pretty chic, and that there are definitely people over the age of 15 who can rock some jewel-toned strands — not many people, mind you, but still, some. Sadly, some of their other extension offerings can only be classified as, well, unfortunate. Did a Scarlet Macaw explode on one model's head? Is the other model trying to smuggle a cocker spaniel into the country? So many questions, so few answers. Look, we're all for experimenting with different colors, textures, and lengths, when it comes to hair, but we also don't want our locks to bear any passing resemblance to anything from the animal kingdom. But maybe that's just us?

Hair Tattoos: Because Regular Tattoos Are For Wusses
So you say you've tried pretty much every iteration of inking out there and are looking for new ways to tattoo yourself? (You're not Kat Von D, are you?) Then let us introduce you to the latest wave in body decoration: Hair tattooing. To get your 'do designed, a hair tattoo expert takes to your mane with a hair trimmer and creates a follicular work of art by shaving hair into the pattern of your choice. It's unfortunately (fortunately?) not permanent, but the tattoo will last as long as it takes for your hair to grow in. Intrigued? Check out a live demonstration and score your own design this week at Ricky's NYC — they'll be showcasing Babyliss Pro's Dennis Joseph and his sick shaving skills.
When: Tuesday, December 6, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: Ricky's NYC Soho, 590 Broadway (between Houston and Prince streets), 212-226-5552.

Awkward Dude 'Do Throwback: The Hitler Youth Haircut
Men's style has gotten a whole lot more tailored in the past few years, and we're all the more grateful for it (bye bye, cargo shorts!). This includes dude grooming, with guys looking past the crewcut for alternative handsome, polished hairstyles.
However, one trend in NY has a few pulling at their collars, if only for its name: The Hitler Youth. It's buzzed on the sides, floppily long on top, and slicked back or to the side — a popular style outside of Nazi Germany, to be sure, but a clear trademark of the Nazi aesthetic. The New York Times reports that in Europe, the haircut is known as "the undercut" (Germany) or "the synth" (Sweden), both terms which we encourage the male hipster denizens of the States to adopt instead of that other one. Yikes.

Our love for the classic low bun is well-documented, but we fell even harder for the timeless 'do after we spied Camilla Belle's gorgeous interpretation at a recent Ralph Lauren event. It's never too early to start planning out your holiday beauty looks and this sleek, side-parted bun is the perfect addition to any party ensemble. We were lucky enough to get an easy how-to from Bumble and bumble über-stylist Rolando Beauchamp for recreating this glam bun at home.
So, grab your best sequined frock and get ready to be a stunner at your next fête!

Oh Em Gee: Blake Lively Now Has Crazy, Curly, Strawberry Blonde Hair
Now that it's très passé, there are only a few times we can use "OMG." Anything to do with Gossip Girl still qualifies though. So, we're bringing out the initials for Blake Lively, who was (and please say this in Kristen Bell's voice) spotted on the Upper East Side doing some major credit card damage at high end boutique Edit, where she dropped dough—several thousand dollars-worth—on two Proenza Schouler purses, Fendi booties, and, according to the store's publicist, almost every Isabel Marant piece on the shelf. While we couldn't help but be green-eyed re: her two-ton shopping bags, the mane event, LOL, was her strawberry blonde, super-curly tresses, quite a departure from her usual, loosely wavy 'do. We wonder if porcupine tips are next...but if not, should Serena keep her follicles orangey and screwed tight? LUK. Yep, we actually abbreviated "let us know".

Leighton Meester's Bangs Make Us Jealous
Leighton Meester can pretty much do no wrong. NYC's favorite Upper East Side troublemaker decided to skip our bang advice and let it all hang out at Tuesday's HTC Ryhme launch event at The Highline Stages. We can't even lie, we're kind of going gaga over this classic look. The face framing 'do paired with clean, fresh makeup, and a simple black top is just perfection. Tres chic, Leighton!Photo: Courtesy of 42 West.
Taming Of The 'Do: Pipino 57 Transforms Willow's Tresses
Lured into test driving Reserve's latest offer last night, I was a little sheepish walking into Ric Pipino's brand new salon, Pipino 57, for my hair makeover and blowout lesson. My hair had a serious beach look going on and I don't mean perfectly windblown and wavy à la Kate Upton. Instead, it was long, full of split ends and bleached out from the summer sun. While I've been wearing this look with pride the last few weeks, it's time to face the fall and leave the summer 'do behind. And so I waved goodbye to my beloved mane, knowing a true hair professional would see my hair as more of a mess than a head of full-bodied memories. See what happened as he transformed my tresses to keep me looking chic.
23 Inspiring Hairdos From New York Fashion Week!
Slicked back, high ponies, dip-dyed, glam curls, fishtails, pin-straight, topknots, bangs, and braids—why is it that with all these amazing hair options we still let our locks go limp and run out the door a little flat and under-prepared? To remedy our frizz, we looked backstage and to the streets at NYFW and got inspired by some of the head-turning looks that really made us wish we spent that extra second with a curling iron or comb. Some people just have it; those ideal waves, no matter the weather. And in addition to being insanely jealous of their natural mops, we try to take a cue from their 'dos. Thanks to our R29 shutterbugs at all of the week's hottest tickets, we've compiled a coiffure lookbook of sorts to motivate us all towards total hair perfection. But don't worry if the shellacked, gravity-defying styles of the models at Preen seem a little out of reach—we have it on good word that messy buns are still hot for fall!
Tough Twisted Cornrows Get A Reboot At United Bamboo

While it's technically only day two of the cyclone of style that is Fashion Week, we've already seen a rather sizable lump of hair and beauty looks backstage that we're sure will be dragged straight off the catwalk and into your fall look, whatever your personal-style philosophy. And, for you broads of a tougher variety, meet United Bamboo's twisty-textured cornrows. This urban classic was artfully re-upped at U.B. with styles ranging from complex updos featuring a maze of twisted locks, to wavy, tousled tough-girl tresses decked out with half-head cornrows reminiscent of last year's oh-so ubiquitous half-shaven head trend. We think that this 'do is doable, even though United Bamboo's looks were definitely more labyrinthian than most laypersons' hair-twisting talents; Just take a little light hair pomade or wax, section your hair, and get to twirling, gathering more hair in each twist as you move upward towards your crown. Secure each twist with a either a light or dark bobby pin to match your hair color, and finish with a light spritz of a reliable hairspray, like L'Oreal's Elnett. And a word of caution: Just say no to anything other than illusion bobby pins to avoid looking like a butterfly-clip clad tween from 1999.
3 Cool Fall Hairstyles And Where To Get Them Done
It's the first day of September, and while the equinox might not hit 'til the 23rd, autumn just feels so real right now. Although there's no need for a SAD light quite yet, we're pretty bummed that this summer seemed to go by quicker than Kim Kardashian's engagement. So, we're pushing back on Mother Nature with the best way we know how—by looking fabulous, of course! Stop feeling sorry for your fading-tan self and take advantage of the best time of year to change up your look. We're not just talking about blazers, skinnies, and that new Céline bag: Oh no, nothing quite transforms like a high-impact hairstyle, and you know we've got those for you! We chatted up three of our favorite salons—The Drawing Room, Ion Studio, and Whittemore House—and snapped three girls who represent their game-changing fall 'dos. Plus, we got the shear-geniuses who did the coiff work to dish on why they're just perfect for fall. Weather revenge, anyone?
