Overalls have quite the storied history: Arriving on the scene as staple for farmers, workers, and militia in the 1700s, the uniform eventually made its way to the mainstream circa 1960. In the '80s, the silhouette had a major pop-culture moment — acid-washed and with one shoulder unfastened, of course — and in the '90s, it became the style du jour for toddlers (OshKosh B'Gosh, anyone?). With its comeback among the normcore enthusiasts today, it's easy to see this onesie's permanent place in the fashion cycle. But, though we're embracing the look, it can be tricky to ditch its not-so-grown-up feel. So, to keep the overalls trend moving well beyond our #TBTs, we're bringing you five modern ways to freshen up our childhood classic.

With new overalls styles from AG, like an all-black tapered-leg cut and a feminine pinafore, you can easily turn the latest interpretations up a notch with clever styling. From chunky, ice-blue platforms to sophisticated button-ups, there's an overalls pairing for everyone. Check out the looks ahead — if you ask us, these are ones for the history books.

    Classic Black
Black overalls, like black jeans, provide a more sleek and sophisticated take on casual denim. Have fun with textures by bringing in a perforated neon top and shiny metallic slides. Finish the look with a bag in an unexpected shape and funky gem earrings.

    The Originals
These faded blue overalls are the perfect blank canvas for a true spring look. While they're the most common and classic overall style, you can spruce 'em up by skipping the standard white tee and opting for a floral-print top underneath. Throw on some polished orange platform sandals for a complementary pairing, top it off with a Panama hat and a graphic tote, and you're ready to cruise.

    The Pinafore
For a feminine alternative to the classic overall, try a dress jumper. This style is super versatile and could work with just about any top underneath. We kept the clothing simple with a gray long-sleeve number and jazzed up the look with spring sunnies, a lush leather bag, and blue platform lace-ups.

    The Straight Khaki
The tomboy fit of these overalls makes them the perfect choice for any weekend happening. Punch up the muted tone with tropical-print sneaks; a woven baseball cap; and cool, clear-frame shades.

    The All-Over Floral
A bold paisley print may seem tricky to pull off, but you can balance the busy pattern by pairing it with clean neutrals. A sharp sleeveless button-up, pointy-toe flats, and a sleek leather backpack streamline the look for a sophisticated take on the playful onesie.
