The streets of our fair city hold plenty of stories. We know the tales of the crazy Barbary Coast days, the Gold Rush, the great earthquake and fire of 1906, the Beat Generation, the Summer of Love, the birth of the Gay Rights Movement and legend of Harvey Milk, the Dot-Com Boom and its eventual burst...and our current post-recession boom. But there's one story that we haven't yet heard in its entirety: The arrival and impact of the AIDS epidemic in the '80s, when the tight-knit gay community of S.F. was struck hard. In the powerful new documentary We Were Here, director David Weissman narrates a moving chronicle of the individuals who have lived through and suffered loss in the panic-stricken climate of a culture that did not yet fully understand the devastating disease. Already screened at the Sundance Film Festival (and once at the Castro Theatre) we’re stoked that the flick is finally getting a mainstream release this month.
