This Is Our Jam: Foxes, “White Coats”

It’s never been a more exciting time for experimental pop. Artists like Charli XCX, Jessie Ware, and Icona Pop have been taking their synth-heavy sounds and ‘80s and ‘90s inspirations to strange and catchy new places. So, when we first heard Foxes (aka 22-year-old Londoner Louisa Rose Allen), we couldn’t have been more amped. “White Coats” is a cinematic piece of synth-pop with a slow build and an IMAX-sized hook. One could interpret the lyrics as narrating a battle with mental illness, while another could go with a more carefree reading — essentially recreating the last scene in The 400 Blows. In either case, “White Coats” is a defiant piece of pop that proves Foxes deserves to be right up there with her contemporaries.
