This Is Our Jam: Blackbird Blackbird, “Tear”

blackbird
Man, what a pretty song. With “Tear,” San Francisco producer Blackbird Blackbird works with a sonic palette filled with innumerable soft, bright, and warm sounds. From the vibrant samples to the intricately programmed percussion, “Tear” is clearly indebted to the organic tones of the Warp Records roster. Yet, as much as Blackbird Blackbird owes to IDM, he also appears to takes inspiration from the indie rock of the same period.
It's almost too fitting then, that the video accompaniment was directed by Feel Good Lost, who shares his name with the first Broken Social Scene album. Blackbird Blackbird imbues “Tear” with as much BSS as he does Boards of Canada or Bibio, combining foggy vocal fragments with loosely strummed guitars. It’s the sound of a carefree summer's day done right.
