Hold The Phone: New York Gets A New Area Code

Oh, area codes. As interesting as they are to google after some unidentified number pops up on your phone (and subsequently wondering who you know in Montana), the joys of cell phones have eased the need to remember these little auxiliary digits. Residents of the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island will be getting a surprise from the North American Numbering Plan Administration, who is adding area code 929 to new lines or new service plans (the existing area codes are 212, 718, 917, 646, and 347.) Unfortunately Manhattanites are left out of this monumental change, but unless they're worried their area codes are too passé, we doubt they'll be too broken up about it.
