Four Fun July 4th Ideas For The So-Cal Weekender

fourth-of-july-weekend-itin-site
Summer holiday weekends are all about relaxation, so the last thing we want our readers doing is stressing out about what should make it onto their agendas. So just take a page from our Independence Day weekend cheat sheet to get your July started with a bang.

Listen: Entrance Band and The Growlers at The Smell
The Smell is arguably our favorite small venue in L.A. Every show at the all-ages club feels intimate, energetic, and totally unlike any other space in the city. This weekend, two of our fave L.A. bands, The Entrance Band (bassist Paz Lenchantin from A Perfect Circle and Zwan, always rocks a cool look onstage, and Guy Blakeslee is as charismatic as they come) and The Growlers (you'll have a crush on this band after their set is done!) are playing so it's the perfect way to kick off a killer So-Cal weekend.

Friday, July 2nd, 9 p.m., The Entrance Band and The Growlers at The Smell, 247 Main Street (between West 2nd and West 3rd Streets); 213-625-4325.

Do: Bellacures In Santa Monica
We've already told you that one of our fave nail spots, Bellacures, is opening in Santa Monica and this weekend they are featuring a ton of great deals for those of you who want to get your pampering fix this weekend. Don't forget to check out our special R29 deal for our readers, and hit up this super-spa, stat!

Bellacures Santa Monica, 1609B Montana Avenue (between 16th and 17th street); 310-584-4584.

See: L.A.'s Finest Fireworks Show
Fact—You can't have the Fourth of July without fireworks. And while the light show at The Hollywood Bowl is legendary, if you don't feel like paying a pretty penny, then head down to Marina Del Ray. The beaches in MDR are open to the public, and pyrotechnic aficionados recommend this vantage point because, if you look north, you can see what is affectionately referred to as the "diamond necklace fireworks display" up the So-Cal coast from the Santa Monica pier to Malibu.

Drink: El Guapo
If you are already experiencing margarita and Corona fatigue, fear not, because today's featured libation is going to knock your socks off. Named El Guapo (crafted by our culinary guru, Claire Thomas at The Kitchy Kitchen), this cool cocktail has a totally unexpected taste. With hints of lime, cucumber, and hot sauce, El Guapo will be wildly impressive to everyone at your BBQ.
Directions: Muddle 1.5 ounces of limejuice and cucumbers in the bottom of your shaker. Fill half-way up with ice, add 3 ounces of tequila, and shake like hell. Pour into a tumbler with some of the ice and 1 thinly sliced Persian cucumber. Finish with hot sauce (just a dash for those of you who want it mild, or ½ a teaspoon for something stronger), and salt and pepper to taste. Stir to combine and garnish with red chili peppers.
