A Vacation Is In, Er, On The Bag With R29 + Samudra’s Beachy Clutch

samudra-2Shop It Now The sands of Hawaii really are that amazing, and help us mainlanders take our minds off the rapidly plummeting temps, HI-based brand Samudra and Refinery29 have teamed up for a sunny pouch pick-me-up. For our exclusive Holiday Edition collaboration, Samudra has presented a carry anything carry-all—printed with an idyllic snapshot of the sun and sand—perfect for an iPad, e-Reader, beauty organizer, or a no-brainer clutch. We asked designer Jennifer Binney to talk to us about her favorite seaside spots, what every Hawaiian visitor should know, and living the laid-back life in the 50th state. Be sure to pick a bright slice of beach to keep you chipper long after the sun has set. Mahalo!
Wow, these clutches are making us long for the ocean. What is your favorite beach in the world?
"A secret beach in Hawaii called Keawa'ula." (Note: The beach is a major surf spot!)

What inspires you to think of the sun and the sand?

"Like anyone, the chill of winter always sends my mind right to the beach!"

If a Refinery29 reader was visiting Hawaii for the first time, what should they know about his/her trip?
"Don't do the obvious. Rent a car and explore—there is a whole world of discovery off the beaten track. Try some shaved ice! Grab a rainbow one at either Wai ola's or Matsumoto's—two institutions known for the colorful treat. And for footwear, they should pack slippahs, A.K.A. Havaiannas."

When you were working on this collaboration, what was on your moodboard?

"I've been seriously listening to 'Miles Away' by the Australian band Years Around The Sun. I've also been obsessively watching a little surf short film by a group called Common Ground. My moodboard is always stocked with curios from my trips: flamingo masking tape from Japan, Huichol Indian neon artwork, vintage surf pics, and my new neon surf wax. It smells so good!"

Right now, if we were to dig through your clutch, what are three things we would find?
"Chanel lipgloss, my Dezso bracelet, and my iPhone."

What is one beauty product every Hawaiian gal (or Hawaiian gal at heart) ought to have inside her purse?
"Maybe a beach bag would be better! Monoi oil from Tahiti: We live by it. It's a moisturizer, hair wonder, and possibly the best-smelling thing you can imagine! You definitely ought to try it out this summer...or winter!"
