Hot Mess: A Wild Eyed Makeup Trend Gets Pretty

We've found our eye makeup's artful smudges after nocturnal antics or late-night dance-a-thons dramatically impressive (don't even try to deny it!). Alas, we know that "lived-in" look is far from office-friendly. But the fall runways would lead us to believe otherwise—Marc Jacobs, Chanel, and Zac Posen all revealed a smeared and blurry-chic eye look for their fall/winter 2010 shows. So, to extend this rule-breaking trend your way, we've got three eye looks that prove the morning-after vibe is more than of the moment. Arm yourself with mascara, liner, and a good smoky shadow, and follow our easy guide to some gorgeous controlled chaos.

Zac Posen—Take it to the next level with eye-framing lines.

Apply black pencil around the waterline of the eye then smudge. Using crème liner and brush, draw horizontal lines in the crease of the upper lid and just below the bottom lash. Try Urban Decay's Ink for Eyes, which contains a high-tech polymer for extra smooth application. Finish with mascara.

Marc Jacobs—Exchange soft lashes for extra thick, loaded mascara.

Apply liquid eyeliner to the upper lash, then coat top and bottom lashes with heavy layers of mascara. Add a youthful, romantic feel with a hint of pale eyeshadow applied to the lids with fingertips.

Chanel—The smoky eye gets a texturized, painted-on upgrade.

Line the upper and lower eye with a soft, black liner and smudge, then apply black or deep gray shadow to the top lid (Chanel's Peter Philips used the fall '10 Quadra eyeshadow in Engima; we recommend Givenchy's Le Prisme Mono with four black finishes in one). Next, use a liner brush to dab black crème liner onto the brow bone and outer perimeter of the eye. Finish with black mascara.
