Omar Sharif, the star best known for his iconic roles in classic films like Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, and Funny Girl, has passed away, the BBC reports. The actor was 83. "He suffered a heart attack this afternoon in a hospital in Cairo," Sharif's agent, Steve Kenis, said. Born in Alexandra, the Egyptian star had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Sharif was nominated for an Oscar for his role in 1962's Lawrence of Arabia. He also had three Golden Globe wins, and was presented with the UNESCO's Sergei Eisenstein Medal in 2005. Sharif's last film was the 2013 French-Morrocan film Rock the Casbah, though American audiences may better remember his role in 2004's Hidalgo, opposite Viggo Mortensen. In 2003, he won the equivalent of a French Oscar for Monsieur Ibrahim. Sharif is survived by one son.
