After 15 Seasons American Idol Will Come To An End

The good news for American Idol acolytes? The show is returning for a fifteenth season this fall. The bad news? That’s all, folks. This morning, FOX announced that it won’t be renewing Idol in 2016 . So, if you’ve ever considered becoming a contestant, start practicing in the shower: You're running out of time.  Judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban, and Harry Connick, Jr., along with longtime host Ryan Seacrest, will see the show off in what the network is calling a “season-long celebratory event.” While the details have yet to be released, it’s fair to assume we’ll be seeing some familiar famous faces from Idol seasons past, as well as some star-studded performances. The talent show's passing isn’t unexpected news. Idol has struggled to remain relevant and popular during its long tenure, and while Season 14 saw some uptick in viewership and critical acclaim, the overall ratings among young adults have followed a downward trend in recent years. That doesn't mean it'll be easy to say goodbye to the show that brought us stars like Jennifer Hudson, Clay Aiken, and Carrie Underwood — not to mention Kelly Clarkson, whose audition tape still gives us goosebumps.
