With the recent release of his second solo record, G I R L, Pharrell Williams has been in the news a lot recently. Oh, who are we kidding. Williams is always in the news, because he's basically produced every song you've ever liked, and goes to every award show you've ever watched.
But, despite the man's ubiquity, he's never really addressed the controversy surrounding "Blurred Lines", his smash hit collaboration with Robin Thicke. As it soared to song-of-the-summer heights, the singers took a lot of heat for particularly salacious lyrics that many deemed sexually predatory. Williams, for one, still doesn't understand what all the fuss was about. "What would be controversial about it?" he asked in a recent interview with Pitchfork. "When you pull back and look at the entire song, the point is: She’s a good girl, and even good girls want to do things, and that’s where you have the blurred lines."
Unfortunately, the interview fails to address the video featuring a handful of nude women gyrating around a bunch of fully clothed men. Instead, Williams does his best to put the fiasco behind him once and for all. "People who are agitated just want to be mad, and I accept their opinion. I appreciate everything 'Blurred Lines' became, and I appreciate the fact that it lifted Robin [Thicke] to a place where he deserves to be vocally. We got a kick out of making people dance, and that was the intention.
