After spending three months in the slammer for tax evasion, Hill is due to ditch the jumpsuit today, and, well, her mouth is far from shut. "Consumerism" was written before her imprisonment, but polished and mixed over the course of her stay. It's a track that's both introspective, documenting "the space she was in" (as described on her Tumblr) and opinionated, attacking the system that brought her down.
"I felt the need to discuss the underlying socio-political, cultural paradigm as I saw it," she said in a statement accompanying the track. "I haven’t been able to watch the news too much recently, so I’m not hip on everything going on. But inspiration of this sort is a kind of news in and of itself, and often times contains an urgency that precedes what happens." Indeed, the track is less keen to world events in favor of various philosophies and isms. Sonically, it's a track similar to the Fugees, only spun through a Hadron Collider. Her spitfire lyrics mixed over a reggae 2.0 production (a.k.a. this isn't a track to chill out to) mark the beginning of Ms. Hill's new era, and one helluva comeback.
