6 Things People With Great Lashes Always Do

"Are your lashes real?" might be the ultimate beauty compliment of 2017. 9 times out of 10, they're not. (No shade, we love extensions as much as the next person.) But when the fringe is au natural, you can bet we're hounding the owner for mascara recs.
What we've come to find though, is that while the formula is important, it's how you put it on that really matters. The people with the most impressive lashes have graduated far beyond the wiggle method. There's melting, swiping, shaking, and even dotting involved.

“I dust my lashes with setting powder before applying mascara to help build the volume.” — Lexy Lebsack, senior beauty editor

“Instead of wiping off the tip of the wand with tissue, I carefully dot that extra glob across my lashes and then comb through them. It saves product and gives my lashes a thicker, darker look.

"I also treat mascara wands like makeup brushes — saving and cleaning them regularly. If I'm in a pinch, I can use my go-to wand to apply another mascara I don't love as much. The results are pretty similar.” — Cat Quinn, beauty director

Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Curling Mascara, $24, available at Benefit Cosmetics.

"I truly believe my mascara looks better in the summer. Why? Because it's hotter than hell in my apartment and while that normally doesn't fare well for other beauty products on my vanity, the heat only makes my mascara better. The formula is loose and silky when I pull it out of the tube and it glides right onto my lashes with ease.

"Since I can't always wait until summer to try this trick out, I reach for this new Dior option that lets you pump the base of the tube so the formula is warmed up before sweeping on. Genius!" — Samantha Sasso, beauty editorial assistant

“After curling my lashes, I brush on the formula and let the wand hover at the tip of my lashes for a second or two. I was told by someone ages ago that this lets the mascara dry in a more upward-bound motion. I have NO idea if this is actually true, but I do it and I think it works!” - Mi-Anne Chan, beauty writer

Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara, $23, available at Too Faced.

“A makeup artist once told me to always wipe a brand-new mascara wand with a tissue before using it — it keeps the clumps from forming if you do it once when you first open it.” — Kelsey Castañon, beauty news editor

It Cosmetics Superhero Mascara, $24, available at It Cosmetics.

“I once heard one of my favorite vloggers suggest letting your mascara sit for two weeks so the formula has a chance to harden a bit. Nowadays, I only try this out on the wetter formulas I find, but without a doubt it works.” — Samantha Sasso, beauty editorial assistant

Maybelline Volum'Express The Rocket Mascara, $6.99, available at Ulta Beauty.
