5 Nail Trends That Will Become Your Signature Color

Photographed by Lorenna Gomez-Sanchez.
In the past month alone we've seen unicorns, Impressionist art, and beach getaways become full-fledged nail trends. Sure, these mini works of art are fun to look at — and far from boring or expected — but for those of us who aren't blessed with the ability to craft watercolor creations onto a surface smaller than a nickel, trying the looks at home can feel like an impossible task. Plus, they're a bit too loud for some.
Fret not, minimalists, because we have something for you, too. With summer on the horizon, we're looking forward to switching up our manicure color palette with the top nail color trends around. To help guide to way, we tapped Los Angeles-based editorial and celebrity manicurist Debbie Leavitt. Her picks? Clean and bright shades that flatter every skin tone are going to be huge. Think: opaque nudes, bright fuchsias, and lush greens. The best part? None of these styles require a degree in fine art to accomplish.

Heavy Metal

Metallic polishes are to nails as highlighter is to cheekbones: A rad way to get your shine on — and Leavitt is predicting them as a huge summer trend. "I'm really into metallics for summer," she says. "I love color with just a hint of shimmer that makes the nails glow." This shade by NARS is one of her favorites.

Essie's Penny Talk is another classic metallic that works on everyone. "[The NARS and Essie] polishes both have a rich satin finish and look great on any nail length," says Leavitt. "I call them 'the new nudes'." There's one caveat, however: "Metallics can show ridges on the nail," she adds, "So be sure to smooth the nail bed with a gentle buff before application"

No-Color Color

"Opaque, nude nails are still going strong," says Leavitt. When on set, she likes pairing neutral polishes with bright clothing or fun patterns. Of course, finding the perfect nude polish is a task akin to finding your ideal foundation shade — you'll have to do some fieldwork, but the results will be well worth it.

Tip: Leavitt calls Essie's At the Barre a top pick for light to medium skin tones.

And for those with dark to deep complexions? Try this rich and warm shade by Black Up, a foolproof option if hunting for the perfect hue isn't your thing.

Bright Pinks & Purples

With temps on the rise we're taking Leavitt's advice and ditching deep, vampy hues for something a little more vibrant. "The right kind of bright is flattering on many skin tones," she says. As you might expect, she's a big believer in letting your nails be your accessories. "Bright nail polish looks fresh with a neutral wardrobe or denim," she adds. This Zoya pick is universally flattering on everyone — and works on the toes, too.

According to Leavitt, brights look best on shorter nails with a squoval shape. That is, "flat across the top with soft corners," she says.

If hot pink isn't your style, try fuschia instead. Depending on the depth of the hue, it can range from super bright to slightly more subdued, like this polish from Jinsoon.

Hot Coral

This time of year, coral everything starts coming out of the woodwork, but Leavitt believes this summer's iterations of the hue will be a touch bolder and brighter than seasons past. She's calling it "hot coral," and notes it's summer 2017's sexiest hue.

Looking for a more revved up shade? Leavitt loves this coral-meets-red polish from Miniluxe.

Lush Green

For those of you who simply can't ditch your darker hues, try reaching for an opaque forest green polish instead of navy, berry, or gray. When you're shopping, look for a shade with a blueish base, like this one from Dolce & Gabbana, says Leavitt. "It will look great on most skin tones.," she says.

Darjeeling Darling is another lush green shade Leavitt loves. Two coats of the polish will provide opaque color that's perfectly on-trend.
