Hearts Broken, Legends Made: All The Celebrity Couples That Mattered In 2016

Photo: Sean M. Haffey/AP/REX/Shutterstock.
By now it's our knee-jerk reaction to call 2016 "The Worst." When we look back at the year in terms of romance, you can definitely make that argument. It was the end of Brangelina and many other long-term couples with no universal couple name. We watched the heartbreak of pop stars, actors, models, and a certain presidential candidate's right-hand woman, and felt their pain just a little too hard. We wanted to retreat to an internet-free cave with every headline about Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, or Lindsay Lohan and Egor Tarabasov.

But not everyone would agree that it was all doom and gloom. This is going to be the anniversary year for Ciara and Russell Wilson, and Anna Camp and Skylar Austin, for example. Any year in which beautiful new babies have been born — Luna Legend, Boomer Phelps, Amada Gosling, and, yeah, even some civilians — still holds some ray of hope for the future. That's also got to be the wish of some of this year's new couples, from Zayn and Gigi to JoJo and Jordan.

Before we close the books on this year's love and loss, let's relive it all one more time.

New Love: Zayn Malik & Gigi Hadid

What a roller coaster these two have taken us on this year. In January, they claimed to be just friends, despite their intimate photos together. Then they were our #couplegoals for months. Twitter was so worried about the singer and model when they reportedly broke up in early June. Just weeks later, though, all was right with the world again, and we went right back to cooing at these two.

Reunited: Miley Cyrus & Liam Hemsworth

Remember when these lovebirds split, and Cyrus was all about her sexual freedom? That felt like the distant past the second we got a whiff of their reunion and imagined it being the stuff of a new Nicholas Sparks movie. After a lot of caginess, they've also confirmed that they're re-engaged, even if she doesn't seem all that in love with her ring.

Engaged: Ben Higgins & Lauren Bushnell

The season 20 Bachelor and his final rose recipient are still living life under the scrutiny of reality-TV cameras, and under reality-TV drama rules. Higgins proposed during the finale in March, but the second everyone noticed the question mark in the title of their spinoff show, Ben & Lauren: Happily Ever After?, we knew things weren't set in stone. They've since cancelled one wedding, but are still engaged.

New Love: Sarah Paulson & Holland Taylor

Though they reportedly started dating in 2015, they became New York Times official in March. "What I can say absolutely is that I am in love, and that person happens to be Holland Taylor," she said.

New Baby: Chrissy Teigen & John Legend

Just when you thought those two couldn't get any more delicious, they brought baby Luna Simone Stephens into the world on April 14. Snapchat will never be the same.

New Baby: Kelly Clarkson & Brandon Blackstock

The American Idol winner and her husband demonstrated their continued talent for naming children with the birth of their son, Remington Alexander, in April. He's Clarkson's second (after River Rose) and Blackstock's fourth.

Split: Drew Barrymore & Will Kopelman

After four years of marriage and the birth of two daughters, the actress and art consultant announced their split in April. They seem on pretty good terms, though, as evidenced by her support of him at this year's New York City Marathon.

New Baby: Ryan Gosling & Eva Mendes

Following the birth of second daughter Amada Lee in April, Gosling said that having a 2-year-old and a newborn was "like walking through a field of flowers every day." Either he has a lot of domestic help or he was being sarcastic.

New Love: Jenny Slate & Chris Evans

The actors fell in love in the most typical Hollywood way — while making the upcoming movie Gifted — and yet something about the pairing between a comedian and a superhero surprised many when it was revealed in May. We're jealous of how Slate described the relationship: "It's kind of like I got my dream seventh grade boyfriend."

New Love: Katy Perry & Orlando Bloom

These two have had some very entertaining moments on camera since they visited Cannes together in May. From that naked paddleboarding photo to a Thanksgiving spent in matching red PJs with Perry's family, these two are a gift that keeps on giving.

Split: Amber Heard & Johnny Depp

We can't even write something lighthearted about a marriage that allegedly ended in domestic violence in May, so we won't. This was a tough one.

New Baby: Emily Blunt & John Krasinski

Blunt and Krasinski, who called his wife "the best mom in the world" in a recent interview, welcomed second daughter Violet in June.

New Baby & Wedding: Audrina Patridge & Corey Bohan

The Hills alumna and her longtime boyfriend had a doubly blessed 2016: Daughter Kirra Max was born in June, and the new parents tied the knot in Hawaii in November.

Split: Demi Lovato & Wilmer Valderrama

"This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, but we have realized more than anything that we are better as best friends," the two announced in June — and with that, they ended a six-year romance that was as beautiful as it was baffling to outsiders.

Just Married: Michael Phelps & Nicole Johnson

Not many of us knew who Nicole Johnson was until the Rio Olympics, when sightings of her and baby Boomer in the stands were the highlight of every swimming event. Little did we know that Johnson and Phelps had already married in secret back in June. They made it up to us with a second picturesque wedding in Mexico in October.

Split: Taylor Swift & Calvin Harris

This was one of Swift's longest running relationships, but it didn't turn out to be quite as "magical" as she once called it. Things between the singer and DJ got ugly fast, but they seem to have settled down at last (at least until her next break-up single?).

Split: Iggy Azalea & Nick Young

In March, when a video leaked of the L.A. Laker admitting he cheated on his fiancee, she stood by him for a minute. And then she seemed to have realized that she's Iggy F-ing Azalea and didn't have to put up with that. She announced via Instagram that the engagement was off in June.

Engaged: Pippa Middleton & James Matthews

The second news broke in July that the Duchess of Cambridge's sister was getting married, all anyone wanted to know was whether Kate would be in the wedding, stealing the show just as Pippa did hers. Instead, it will be Pippa's niece, flower girl Princess Charlotte.

Split: Joshua Jackson & Diane Kruger

The end of this 10-year romance in July was pretty sad for onlookers, but we have to take heart with Kruger's uplifting Instagram take on things. Quoting Jimi Hendrix, she wrote, "The story of love is hello and good-bye until we meet again."

Just Married & Pregnant: Ciara & Russell Wilson

The couple cancelled their North Carolina wedding plans to boycott the state's bathroom law, and instead got hitched in a freaking English castle in July. Having pledged to abstain from sex until their marriage, they apparently wasted no time after that — the singer and football player announced in October that they're expecting a baby.

Split: Lindsay Lohan & Egor Tarabasov

LiLo appeared to be getting back on track earlier this year, living low-key in London, in between her romantic getaways with her Russian heir maybe-fiance. Things weren't what they appeared, however, and in July, she was captured on video saying he was strangling her. She told reporters that wasn't his first abusive episode, either.

Split: Lady Gaga & Taylor Kinney

Given the country turn of Joanne, we can speculate that A. Things were already shaky between the two when she was recording, B. She was inspired to co-write "Million Reasons" after they broke off the engagement in July, or C. She just broke up with him for sad-song cred. Pshaw. We're not that cynical, yet.

New Baby: Megan Fox & Brian Austin Green

This ridiculously photogenic couple had temporarily separated in 2015, but they reunited in time for the birth of son no. 3, Journey River Green, in August.

Split: Kat Dennings & Josh Groban

Though the actress and singer seem to have been cut from the same nerdy-but-beautiful cloth, they called it quits after two years of dating in August.

Engaged: JoJo Fletcher & Jordan Rodgers

JoJo got over Ben Higgins breaking her heart just in time to meet the ex-football player of her dreams. They haven't announced a wedding date, but their social media posts of late indicate they're pretty happily enjoying their engagement.

Split: Jennifer Lopez & Casper Smart

This isn't the first time J.Lo and the dancer have split, but their August parting may have been their last, if those cheating rumors hold any truth.

Just Married: Kevin Hart & Eniko Parrish

After two years of engagement, these two finally got married in August, and the photos of Parrish's two Vera Wang gowns were definitely worth the wait.

Split: Huma Abedin & Anthony Weiner

If you think 2016 sucked for you, put yourself in Abedin's shoes. She finally split from the ex-congressman after one more sex scandal in August. Then, she got to watch the FBI derail the campaign of her boss, Hillary Clinton, over emails supposedly found in a computer seized while investigating Weiner.

New Baby: Adam Levine & Behati Prinsloo

Victoria's Secret models wear pregnancy, like everything else, unfairly well. The reward for our jealousy, though, is getting to see the sweetness that is Dusty Rose, born in September.

Just Married: Anna Camp & Skylar Astin

This adorable couple got engaged on New Year's Day, and then set a prime example for the rest of us on how to hold joint bachelor/bachelorette parties. They wed in a winery in September, and already talk like they've been married for decades.

Split: Chloë Grace Moretz & Brooklyn Beckham

After years of speculation about their relationship, the actress and model went Instagram official this year, posting adorable photo after adorable photo. It was the stuff of a great YA novel adaptation starring Chloë Grace Moretz. Then they went and broke our hearts and split in September.

New Baby: Blake Lively & Ryan Reynolds

"Two under two is tough," Reynolds told Conan O'Brien in November, after the late-September birth of their second child. He also kind of revealed that baby number two is also a girl: "Yeah, a lot of estrogen. It's like an American Girl doll took a shit on my life." Somehow, that's sweet coming from him.

New Love: Ariana Grande & Mac Miller

The longtime collaborators became something more this year — "organically," as Miller put it. They seem too young for us to take their love too seriously, but this double date with their moms in September was the sweetest.

Reunited: Patrick & Jillian Dempsey

"Our marriage was not something I was prepared to let go of," Patrick told People in September, shortly after revealing that his divorce was cancelled. "I didn't feel like we had done all the work. And we both wanted to do that work. That's where it started."

Split: Taylor Swift & Tom Hiddleston

Swift lived up to her name, er, swiftly changing gears from a Scottish DJ to a dashing English actor in June. Alas, Hiddleswift was too good to be true. By the time they split in September, we were all back to thinking it was a publicity stunt.

Split: Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie

The fact that Brangelina is no more — as announced on September 20 — just goes to show how little the public can ever know about someone else's marriage, no matter how famous they may be. Pitt was cleared of child-abuse allegations in November, but he apparently still has to fight his ex to get shared custody of their six children.

Split: Liev Schreiber & Naomi Watts

This was another couple who seemed so well matched in terms of talent, career, and beauty, we couldn't imagine they'd have marital problems. They released a joint statement about their separation in September.

New Baby: Olivia Wilde & Jason Sudeikis

Outspoken feminist Wilde was pretty thrilled that daughter Daisy, her first girl and second child, was born on International Day of the Girl, October 15.

Split: St. Vincent & Cara Delevingne

"Now I know the meaning of life is love, whether that's for yourself or for the world or your partner," Delevingne said in August, gushing to Vogue U.K. about Annie Clark. We still don't know what happened to cause their breakup a month later.

New Love: Kristen Stewart & St. Vincent

We instantly felt like we weren't keeping up on our celebrity gossip when these two lovely ladies appeared on a red carpet together in October. To be fair, their respective splits from Cara Delevingne and Alicia Cargile had only just been rumored weeks before.

Engaged: Samira Wiley & Lauren Morelli

Some of us still haven't gotten over the death of Wiley's character, Poussey, on Orange Is the New Black. The news that she got engaged to OITNB writer Morelli in October certainly helped with our healing, though.

Split: Mariah Carey & James Packer

Billionaire Packer did his best to sweep Carey off her feet, but matching yachts will only get you so far. They got engaged in January, but by October, they were done, and she was so over him she reportedly wanted half the amount of their unsigned prenup, just for the inconvenience he'd caused her. We're only left mourning the photos of the lavish wedding that never was.

Just Married: Dianna Agron & Winston Marshall

The Glee alumna and the Mumford & Sons banjo player got married in Morocco in October in absolutely stunning, if unusual, wedding attire.

One of our favorite celebrity-civilian marriages came to an end this year, when these two called it quits after nine years in October.

New Love: Prince Harry & Meghan Markle

He's a prince and she's a total catch — successful TV star, activist, fashion designer, more. Sadly, when they officially announced their dating status in November, it was also revealed that biracial American Markle had been subject to a ton of abuse since word of their relationship first leaked. Hang in there, guys. We're rooting for you!

New Baby & Engagement: Rob Kardashian & Blac Chyna

Despite a few well-documented hiccups, the engaged reality-star heir and the exotic-dancer-turned-entrepreneur have had quite a romantic year leading up to the birth of their daughter, Dream Renee Kardashian, on November 10.

New Love: Jennifer Lawrence & Darren Aronofsky

This wouldn't be the first time a young star has hooked up with her much older director, but it is the first time such a couple has totally skeeved us out by sharing a lollipop in public.

Pregnant: Bradley Cooper & Irina Shayk

Fortunately for these two, 2016 will not go down as the year in which they bickered in front of the camera at Wimbledon. Rather, it's the year when the model got to walk the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show pregnant with Cooper's kid.

Split: Bella Hadid & The Weeknd

Sigh, we did love how he made her smile. Shortly after rumors of this sad breakup came in November, we saw them together onstage at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. Was that the sign of a reunion, or of their status as totally amicable exes?

The actors have had a whirlwind year since they met while working on a play in 2015. In September, they announced their engagement, and in November, their pregnancy, which Seyfried says has resulted in an embarrassing cottage cheese habit.

These two have never been a shining example of a functional relationship, but when news broke in November that they were living together again, after more than a year apart, it kind of renewed our faith in romance.

The real-life romantic comedy that is this gorgeous family welcomed a second baby, Dimitri Portwood, on December 1. We hope Kunis took plenty of notes from her Bad Moms character.

Split: Hilary Duff & Jason Walsh

If you were a hot, divorced celebrity, wouldn't you have a good fling with a backup dancer or personal trainer? Duff's time with trainer Walsh lasted only from October to December, but it was just long enough for them to embarrass themselves with an awful Halloween costume choice.

Split: Christina & Tarek El Moussa

The real estate agents worked well enough together to host a TV show, Flip or Flop, about their house-flipping ventures, but not well enough to keep their marriage afloat, sadly. They announced in December that they'd been apart since May, when there was a mysterious "misunderstanding" involving a police call and possibly a firearm.
