THESE Are The Original Oreos

I consider myself something of an Oreo aficionado. But I am embarrassed to admit that, until today, I had no idea that Hydrox cookies even existed. If you're like me, you are currently asking yourself what on earth a Hydrox cookie is, and why the name sounds like a dangerous chemical. Well, apparently, they are in fact the original Oreos. According to Grub Street, Hydrox cookies came out in 1908, four years before the Oreos we know and love launched in 1912. Despite the fact that they were taken off of store shelves for good in 2008, Hydrox cookies have their own cult following. And for that very reason, the original Oreos are making a comeback. Thanks to Leaf Brands, a company that brings back discontinued treats (here's to hoping they consider some from our list of faves), Hydrox cookies will make their big return in the near future. The cookies will be made using the genuine recipe from back in the day, which features "real cane sugar and high-quality cocoa," Leaf Brand founder Ellia Kassoff told Grub Street. So far, there's no word on when exactly you can buy your first box, but cookie production is set to start this week. And Kassoff says that ShopRite is the first of what will hopefully be many national carriers. We can't wait to do a side-by-side Oreo/Hydrox comparison (with milk, of course).
