Collecting something you're passionate about can be a lot of fun, sometimes so much so that a kind of mania sets in — anybody remember Beanie Babies? While the thrill of the hunt can give way to a Pokémon-esque, gotta-have-'em-all mentality, focusing on the deeper meaning behind whatever it is you're amassing can lend your mission some welcome perspective. That's just what eBay and Sotheby's aim to do with their upcoming sale, Contemporary Living — Photographs, Prints, & Design.

The sale, which goes live at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22, includes contemporary artworks and photography by the likes of Diane Arbus, Helmut Newton, David Hockney, and Andy Warhol alongside furniture from iconic midcentury designers such as Le Corbusier and Charles and Ray Eames. Collectible much? In light of so many sought-after 20th century works coming to auction, Sotheby's sat down with design- and art-world influencers to talk about how these pieces have inspired them to start and shape their own collections.
