Residents Of This State Can't Stop Bragging About Their Lives

We all know that social media isn't just for sharing our exploits and updates with our friends. It's also for making us look good (it's all about that #personalbrand, right?). Now, we have a pretty good idea of which states have perfected the art of the #humblebrag — and which states are actually keeping it humble. The team at international city-guide app HeyLets asked 2,500 social-media-using Americans to report on the number of posts they publish about "self-promotional topics" chosen to boost the desirability of their lives in the eyes of peers, including "trips to special locations," "attendance at memorable events," and "work-related good news."

"On social networks like Facebook and Instagram," HeyLets writes, "many so-called 'status updates' are really 'brag-ommendatons' — opportunities to enhance your status with friends and followers by showcasing your apparently amazing life." Okay, fair enough — we've all seen our fair share of posts clearly designed to induce #fomo and have likely been guilty of sharing a few ourselves. But, certain states are home to more self-promoting social-media users than others (at least according to the social-media users themselves, which leaves the possibility that some are underplaying their online braggadoccio). Here are the top 20 most boastful and top 20 most humble states in the U.S., with the percentage of residents who often post boastful content in parentheses. Plus, our five favorite self-promotional topics.
