Winter is coming and, apparently, so are flashbacks. The next season of HBO's download champion Game of Thrones is still a ways away. But, when you're one of the most popular shows on television, the 24-hour news cycle shows you no mercy.

Today's nugget comes courtesy of none other than GoT masterminds David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who revealed that, yup, season five will contain flashbacks. During a recent Q&A with a group of film students in Spain, the producers let the proverbial Dire wolf out of the bag. "By making the first season, we set a rule: No prophecies, dreams or flashbacks. We failed the first two and this season the third. So yes, this season will finally have flashbacks.” According to Entertainment Weekly, the quote was loosely translated from an unnamed Spanish website, and it's unclear whether it was Benioff or Weiss who said it.
Nevertheless, in terms of GoT rumors, this is about as juicy as they come and should be enough to send Throniacs (we're going to trademark that) into a tizzy. Book readers can attest that flashbacks play a major role in a certain character's upcoming storyline, so their inclusion here should come as little surprise. Entertainment Weekly has also confirmed that season five will actually open with a flashback.
In an interview last month, actor Charles Dance — who played murdered patriarch Tywin Lannister — all but confirmed that fans have not seen the last of him. Today's revelation all but confirms it. Tywin Lannister is back: In flashback form! Commence Charles Dancing in the streets now. (Entertainment Weekly)
