Simon Doonan has described Diana Vreeland as "always so beautifully dressed" and "fabulously dictatorial." And while his firsthand accounts have provided some delightful insight into the world of the undeniably inspiring former Vogue editor-in-chief, an exciting new book is about to take everything to the next level.
This week, more than 300 pages of Vreeland's memos — notes to Richard Avedon, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Irving Penn, and many others — will be published in a new book compiled by her grandson, Alexander Vreeland, entitled Memo: The Vogue Years. From 1963 to 1971, Vreeland offered beautiful words of guidance, wisdom, and support to numerous colleagues and friends. Before the world was shooting off emails and text messages left and right, Vreeland was taking the time to dictate thoughtful, personal, even funny letters on the regular.
The Daily Beast has shared 14 of its favorite quotes from Vreeland's memos. And with gems like, "The future holds a golden world. It will be for beauty; it will be for intelligent productiveness" and "The hottest thing in the world is to wear pants with stockings," the entire list — not to mention the book itself — is absolutely worth checking out.
