The Supermodel We've Fallen Hard For Lets Us Into Her NYC Pad

By Meagan Wilson
To be completely candid (or should that be kompletely kandid?), there's something about a 21-year-old, six-foot-something brunette who's all legs, glow-y skin and swingy bobbed waves (with time at Harvard under her belt, to boot), that should inspire emotions, well, a lot closer to envy rather than encouragement. And, that's to put it lightly. But when it comes to the case of Karlie Kloss (aren't you impressed with us for resisting the urge to get all alliterative with that one?), we kind of couldn't help but fall hard, juuust a little.
For starters, the model-slash-burgeoning mogul is genuinely nice, despite rubbing shoulders with industry legends (and we do mean legends) on the daily and having graced the most major of catwalks since the tender age of 15 (she's an old pro, you guys). Oh, and while preening for the likes of Steven Meisel and Annie Leibowitz may be her 9-to-5, girl also has collaborations with everyone from Momofuku to Frame Denim to an upcoming collection with the eyewear aficionados at Warby Parker (launching tomorrow) taking up precious time in her iCal. And did we mention a portion of the proceeds from the latter is going to the nonprofit Edible Schoolyard NYC? We told you: If she wasn't so impossible not to like we would have to hate her.
We spent our afternoon with Kloss getting the grand (and we do mean grand) tour of her brand new West Village townhouse and raiding her Tamara Mellon and Coach-filled closet before running off to the park for an impromptu excursion through Kloss' 'hood. Kloss, in a yellow cut-out sundress by Reformation and with Go-Pro in hand, owned our photog's Jake's camera as she walked us through a nearby park — at least, she did before our spontaneous jaunt was crashed by a pint-sized soccer player who took a serious liking to our crew (to put it mildly), even sitting in our laps before running off again. See what we mean about the model being impossible not to like?

“I would love to invite Paul Newman to my hypothetical dream dinner party. Having the opportunity to ask him about how he started Newman’s Own and built this amazing philanthropic force would be absolutely incredible. Not only that, but he’d make a very handsome dinner date.”

“I’ve always admired Warby Parker — they’re this cool, young brand creating affordable and chic eyewear while also giving back. It’s amazing all they’ve been able to do since they launched. When I met Warby Parker’s co-founders a few years ago at a charity basketball tournament, we stayed in touch and remained good friends. We’ve been talking about collaborating together on something for a while. The timing finally lined up, and we started to move forward to realize the collection. The rest is history!”

“I danced ballet for many years, and it was drilled into me that your nails and makeup had to be simple and elegant. So, to this day I’m always drawn to shades of pale pink. That said, I do love a glamorous red lip every now and then.”

“When I first moved to New York, I scrounged my pennies to buy a Prada bag. It was my first big fashion purchase as a model and my prized possession. I wore it constantly and still have it to this day.”

“[My 'fashion week survival kit' is...] Karlie’s Kookies and a coconut water! I’m constantly moving going between fittings and shows — snacks get me through! While it’s awesome to travel and experience a city like Paris during Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week is amazing in part because I get to be home and sleep in my own bed! Also, no matter how many years I live in New York, there’re always new things to do and experience!”

“I was first discovered at a charity fashion show in St. Louis. I was 14 and this agent came up to me and started talking about my future modeling career. If modeling hadn’t panned out, I’d be in school right now taking lots of classes and finding my path. Growing up, I wanted to be a doctor. My dad’s a doctor, and I’ve always admired and looked up to his work and dedication to his profession. It’s an incredibly noble and important job.”

“The collection has three pairs — the Marple, Clara, and Julia. Each is classic and feminine. In coming up with the design for the pairs, we decided to create an ombre effect in each of the lenses. So, while there are three pairs, there are actually six styles in total counting each of the lens gradients. I especially love wearing the Clara’s. They have this really cool, rounded retro look and go with everything.”

“Collaborating with Warby Parker on the design and idea behind the Karlie Kloss x Warby Parker collection was an incredible experience. We really wanted to create a collection that was feminine, classic, and effortless. We had many meetings together to discuss everything from inspirations and design to the concept for the launch event and the beneficiary of the collection, Edible Schoolyard NYC — an amazing organization working to bring gardening and nutritious cooking to schools in the U.S. I’m so excited that after months of planning and prep, we’re finally ready to launch!”

“I actually don’t have one go-to workout. I try to make sure I’m always mixing it up and challenging myself with new routines and trainings. I love dancing, Pilates, yoga, and strength training. It’s important to diversify your workouts to keep things fun and interesting.”

“My ideal day starts with a workout — I like to keep moving. Exercising first thing gives me energy for the day. So, a workout, followed by a delicious power breakfast of egg whites, avocado, hot sauce, fresh juice, and a cup of coffee starts my day off happy and healthy. Really any day spent with my family is ideal. It doesn’t matter what we’re doing, I just enjoy spending time with them.”

[My biggest indulgence is...] “My gram’s butter-and-sugar, normal chocolate-chip cookies. We would always bake them together and the smell of these cookies baking in the oven is indescribably delicious. They’re full of amazing memories and definitely my favorite indulgence.

[My most frequently used emoji is...] the cookie! It makes my Karlie’s Kookies tweets and posts more fun.”

[The best piece of advice I ever received was...] “'Don't sweat the small stuff' —the wise words of my third grade teacher. Many successful models are discovered when they least expect it. While it is always wonderful to be in the right place at the right time, there is no replacement for hard work. I have recognized over the past years that the hard work and time you put into anything, you get out tenfold.”

“A special moment was when I first met Christy Turlington. I was 15 at the time and I remember actually bursting into tears when I was introduced to Christy by Donna Karan at her studio one day. I had never felt that overwhelmed and awe struck as I did when I first met Christy. I am so inspired by what she has accomplished both personally and professionally. She is truly as caring, compassionate, and smart as she is beautiful.”
