This Is Our Jam: Small Black, “Free At Dawn”

To many, Small Back's New Chain may have seemed like a footnote to the chillwave genre: a pleasant if forgettable album that came and went like a warm breeze. "Free at Dawn," from the upcoming Limits of Desire, however, portends bigger, more ambitious things to come from the Brooklyn band. While past tracks tended toward starry-eyed emotionalism, "Free at Dawn" takes the same elements and elevates them to stadium-sized swaths of life-affirming joy. The band's original ingredients are all still here: buzzing synths, careful melody, and a love of nostalgia, but the sepia-tones of 2010 have been replaced by true high-definition.
