Band Of Outsiders’ Nicole Cari Models Her Smooth Minimalist Style

[UPDATE: This story was originally published on October 24.]
When we spotted a dream catcher suspended above Nicole Cari's bed, we couldn't help but find some irony in what may be the coolest item in her slick Silver Lake abode. There's no getting around it — the down-to-earth, curly haired brunette's life is the stuff fashion fantasies are made of. As the senior director of marketing and communications for one of our fave native-L.A. brands, Band of Outsiders, Cari regularly plays dress up with Scott Sternberg, is blessed with an enviable clothing allowance, and has had a major hand in building the brand into the empire it is today.
Oh, and she's freshly returned from a whimsical Tuscan wedding … and don't even get us started on how she serendipitously snagged her covetable home! But, obviously, none of Cari's charmed life came as a fluke — the Chicago native is truly one of a kind, and you simply must read on to see why.

Tell us the story about snagging your gorgeous Silver Lake abode.
"We've had a house crush on this place for years, ever since my friends and previous owners Jessica de Ruiter and Jed Lind had us over. It feels like fate that we actually ended up living here because the house was sold to someone else, and we were granted the opportunity to rent from the new owners since mid-August."

Confession: We've had a house crush since de Ruiter and Lind invited us over, too! Take a peek at our profile of the stylist and her home back in 2009.

What do you do at Band Of Outsiders?
"I'm the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications and I've been with Band for almost six years. I'm involved in a lot of things, but specifically I produce our shows, Polaroid campaigns, and events. I handle all of our social media and special projects. I build brand books, press kits, and other marketing materials, and am a part of the women's design dialogue with Scott Sternberg."

What does a typical day look like?
"The first thing I do is read all of the news, including WWD. Then, I spend all morning responding to emails. Because I manage three PR firms (Black Frame in the U.S., PR Consulting in Europe, and Guthrie in Japan), there are a lot of questions that need to be answered. I'm constantly checking our social media outlets like Twitter and Tumblr and contributing new content. At some point during the day, I'll have a creative brainstorm session with Scott. We'll also play dress up for awhile, and discuss development and product design. Depending on the week, I'll read magazines and make sure I'm up-to-date on credits like who's styling, writing, and shooting what. I always have the next show in the back of my mind, so there's constantly some aspect I'm working on. In between that I'm researching possible collaborations, events, and sponsors."

What's your mantra when it comes to house guests?
"I try to make them feel at home. In the guest room, I like to have a pile of fresh towels on the bed and flowers on the bedside tables. The kitchen should be full of good groceries and bottles of wine, too."

Do you have any plans to do more remodels or redecorating?
"We can't really remodel because we don't own the house, but we're definitely interested in more decorating. We need art! But I don't like to rush it, I'd rather have nothing on the walls than settle for pieces I feel lukewarm about."

What are your top coffee-table tomes you own?
"Mike Slack, The Idea Of The West by Doug Aitken, and Still: Oceanscapes by Debra Bloomfield, which were all gifts."

Where'd you snag all of the pillows throughout your home?
"The pillows in the TV room come from Lost & Found, and the ones in the courtyard were a wedding gift from my dear family friends in Paris. Whenever I'm visiting them, I go on and on about their pillows and carpets. Subtlety must not be my strength because they got the hint!"

Where did you purchase the gorgeous wood credenza in the dining room?
"That might be my best Rose Bowl find ever. I was walking around with my best friend Zoe and I spotted it out of the corner of my eye. I grabbed her and asked, 'Zoe?' To which she replied, 'Done, get it.' We hadn't even heard the price yet! To my delight it was only 50 bucks."

What are your top spots to hunt for décor?
"In L.A. I love Lawson Fenning, Lost & Found, OK, Standard Goods, and the Rose Bowl. In New York, I'm pretty obsessed with John Derian."

Could you tell us how you nabbed your highly coveted gig?
"I was looking to move to L.A. from San Francisco, Scott was looking to hire, and my friend Amy Blessing who owned Apartment Number 9 told me about the job and introduced us."

What's the biggest perk of your job?
"The clothing allowance — I can honestly say that Band of Outsiders is my favorite line to wear."

If you weren't doing what you are now, what would you be doing instead?
"Something with food — I'd like to own a shop like Meryl Streep's character in It's Complicated and bake chocolate croissants. You know, just come and go as I please!"

What's been the funniest or most memorable moment since working at Band?
"The funniest moment was probably when I came into work one morning and there was fake poop on my chair. Scott had put it there because he knew how much I hated this little dog that was always in the office."

What's it like working for Scott?
"Scott's the smartest and most creative person I've ever met — a rare combination, right? He's also the hardest working. My parents thought I was a little nuts leaving my previous job at Current TV for a fashion brand that, at the time, only consisted of Scott. But the moment I met him, I knew we were going to go places. I just had that trust in him, and still do.  Our relationship is as good as it gets. We're very respectful of each other, but at the same time feel comfortable enough to challenge one another. He's also a really fun person to brainstorm with — you'll start somewhere, inevitably have a huge laugh about something, and end up with a brilliant idea, or at least a really fun one."

How do you get inspired?
"Blogs are inspiring, but not as much as real life — it's good to get out of the office. More ideas come to me in the fresh air than sitting at my desk. But, when I'm at my computer, I love The Moment, Remodelista, What Katie Ate, Après Fête, Garance Doré,, and Tumblr."

Can you give us some dish on the vintage floral Lanvin dress you wore to your wedding in Italy?
"We had a ton of activities planned for the week, and it all started with a welcome BBQ outside in the garden of my family's home. I thought it was the perfect occasion to wear such a lovely dress."

Excluding the sample closet, where do you shop in L.A. or online?
"Net-A-Porter, Scout, Opening Ceremony, Creatures of Comfort, 1stdibs, Barneys, La Garçonne, and Tavin Boutique."

Tell us the story behind your beautiful dreamcatcher.
"My mom and I were shopping in New York at one of my favorite stores, No.6, and I had a strong connection to the dreamcatcher on the wall. Again, I must not be very subtle because the next day I unwrapped it at my bridal shower. My mom had gone back for it! It really does catch dreams — both good and bad."

Where do you like to go to unwind?
"I'm not too much fun these days. If you asked me a couple of years ago, I'd probably say The Kibitz Room and The Short Stop, but now you're more likely to find me dancing in my house with my friend Zoe. I love to walk around the Reservoir every evening and on weekends."

What are your top three restaurants in L.A.?
"Pizzeria Mozza, Giorgio Baldi, and Kiwami."

What current trends are you loving?
"I'm loving black socks with black shoes, capes, winter whites ... and jumpsuits — always and forever!"

What was your most recent purchase?
"An off-white, cable-knit Chloé sweater. I like to invest in staples that upgrade my wardrobe instead of adding to the noise."

What's with the owl carvings in your tree?
"Ricky Swallow, an artist friend of the previous inhabitants (Jess and Jed), carved them. They don't have names yet, but I like that they're on the lookout."

Tell us about the most fun dinner party you've held in your courtyard.
"It has to be the one when I didn't cook anything! I know it sounds funny, but I'm from Chicago and my mom sent me a ton of deep-dish pizzas on dry ice as a housewarming gift. So, when I was in a Friday night jam, they saved the day. Instead of focusing on food prep, I lit every candle I had in the house and opened a few bottles of good red wine. We sat outside for hours eating the pies and drinking wine by candlelight."

Who would you love to nosh with in those seats, living or not?
"Probably Ina Garten or Steve Martin."

What has been your biggest coup in your career to date?
"Producing our Pitti Uomo show in Florence — it was a huge production, and overseas to boot!"

Has your style evolved since moving to L.A. from Chicago?
"I go back to Chicago a couple of times a year, but I wish I could go more. I think it's the most pure city in the world. But, the fashion isn't its strength — my style has certainly evolved since living there! I've always cared about clothes, I just want very different ones now than I did then."

"Kai body lotion, Davines shampoo and conditioner, Kérastase Nutritive Crème Olèo-Curl, Leonor Greyl hair oil, a slew of Thibiant face products, and Guinot Beaute Neuve nighttime cream."
