The high-low skirt really dominated our legs last year; they were front and center at nearly every store, on every red carpet, and queued up outside every lounge or bar from Manhattan to Manchester. And the style certainly had its appeal: the fanciness of a gown with a train, without any of the bother. It gave you an opportunity to show off your legs while still covering your backside. Plus, it was fashion — a basic black skirt became not-so-basic with a high-low hemline. But after a couple years at the top of the heap, it’s time for another hemline to take that spot. Marni provided a strong contender during its spring 2016 runway show.
With longer side panels and a cut-out front and back tab, the skirt style is reminiscent of the long, floppy ears of a basset hound — accordingly, we’ve dubbed it the "puppy-ears hemline." On the Marni runways, the skirts played a big role in a collection that riffed on the idea of layering: It was worn super-dramatic over wide-legged trousers, on top of a frilly lace pencil skirt, or tunic-style over gauchos. But, we can see it looking as major just by its lonesome, with bare legs and a great low heel.
