The Week Ahead: 5 Things To See, Do, Eat…And Smell!

Well, folks, it's time to say sayonara to July! With August (hello, Outside Lands!) looming we can't blame you if you're ready to just get on with the rest of the week and wrap this month up. Just for good measure though, we've rounded up this week's must-pencil-in events as a little teaser for all the summer fun yet to come. From watching Johnny Depp on a boat to a photography "safari,” here are the best of the best happenings in S.F. this week. Enjoy!

Floating Films 2012: Pirates of the Caribbean Screening…On A Ship

There's nothing like hopping on the deck of a 1886 sailing ship to swoon over Johnny Depp! Catch the heartthrob in the Pirates of the Caribbean as part of the Floating Films series hosted by the S.F. Maritime Association — a must-add to your outdoor movie-screening schedule. Plus, score major bragging rights when you check-in and tweet that you're watching a movie…on a boat!

Jay Nelson Exhibit at Mollusk Surf Shop

We're big fans of local artist Jay Nelson and the dreamy space he shares with his other half Rachel Kaye. Well, now there's more to adore: rad work from his new "West Portal" series. The new sea-inspired artwork is on display at Mollusk Surf Shop's gallery in the Outer Sunset. While there are paintings in the mix, our fave piece is the plywood structure housing the exhibit that was built to look like a cavern with custom lighting, to boot!

When: Now through September 1, 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Juniper Ridge Field Lab Van at Gravel & Gold

If you're on the hunt for a totally new and unique scent for the summer, look no further. The folks of Juniper Ridge will park their cool 80's-Dad-van-turned-distillation-unit at Mission boutique Gravel & Gold. With old-timey stills and pipes, they'll be brewing up various plants and oils to craft the fragrance of your dreams!

When: Saturday, July 28, 1 to 5 p.m.

Roasted Beans & Barley: Chocolate and Beer Tasting at 18 Reasons


It may be the name of the space, but clearly we don't need to list 18 reasons to scope out this event. We only need two: chocolate and beer. For $35, you get a how-to class by brew master and foodie Pete Slosberg on two of your fave indulgences. Also, did we mention a beer and chocolate pairing at the end of the night? Hello, samples!

When: Wednesday, July 25, 7 to 9 p.m.

The Bold Italic x Photobooth x Brewtruc Urban Photo Safari

Upgrade your everyday Instagram and digital point-and-shoot antics to a much-higher caliber and see the city through the lens of an utterly rad Superheadz camera. A $125 admission fee gets you one of these 35mm click-babies, with a 22mm wide-angle lens and a roll of film. Brewtruc will hook you up with craft beers in a retrofitted school bus. Couple all this with the company of the very cool folks of The Bold Italic and shooting lessons from the Photobooth crew, and what do you have? Only the best Sunday ever!
